Hiring a car for your Madeira holiday means you can easily ex-plore both the most popular and more remote tourist areas. Stopping the car at your leisure and experiencing some of the most stunning viewpoints of Madeira is a unique way to enjoy the island and adds that personal touch.

Car rentals can be arranged in advance of your holiday using Expedia’s handy search tool, leaving you free to pick up your car from Madeira airport and drive straight to your hotel. It means you can make easy trips out to popular spots by car like the lava pools of Porto Moniz, the waterfalls of São Vicente/Seixal and the beautiful Laurissilva Forest in Fanal.

Take a drive up to Pico do Arieiro in the centre of the island: the second highest hill in Madeira, which stands above the clouds at 1818 meters. Not surprisingly, it offering outstanding views all around. A great starting points for mountain walks.

One of the most beautiful and most scenic drives is to cross the island through by the Encumeada Road. Take the old road instead of the tunnel for even more dramatic views (the road runs along 1000 meters above sea level).

Caniçal and Machico are both located on the east coast of Madeira and are where you can taste the famous limpets and fresh fish in one of the many seaside restaurants. Santo da Serra also has a lovely golf course and a Sunday Flea Market where you can taste and buy authentic Madeiran goods such as ‘bolo do caco’ bread with garlic but-ter, cider and fruits. All are well worth the drive.

Just 43 kilometres northeast of Madeira Island is Porto Santo Island and its pristine golden sandy beaches. You can take your car directly onto the daily ferryboat to ex-plore this neighbouring destination.
