Santorini (Thira) International Airport is located around three miles to the southeast of Thira. How to Get Around in Santorini

There’s a public bus service on the island, with buses running regularly and tickets costing around two euros. They’re air conditioned but can get overcrowded in the high season.

There are private car services available on the island if you’re looking for something a little more luxurious – but do book your taxi in advance as there are a limited number on the island and they are in high demand during the peak season.

Rental cars should also be booked early in the summer months. More intrepid travellers can set off on a rental scooter to explore the island. Hire costs about 15 euros a day.

There are some boats running between the major ports, which is a great way to get another perspective on the island. And cycling and walking also come highly recommended – the walk between Fira and Oia is particularly spectacular.

The main attraction in Santorini is the landscape itself. The result of a giant volcanic explosion, the top was literally blown off the island forming a flooded crescent caldera. Some say it was this that inspired the myth of the lost city of Atlantis.

Towns such as Fira and Oia cling to the steep cliff sides, with white-washed buildings cascading down to the water. And the sunsets here are the stuff of legend. Pick your spot, order a cocktail and marvel as the sun disappears into the sea of behind the volcanic crater.
