Flights to Basel

Flying to Basel is made easy by the location of EuroAirport – also known as EuroAirport Basel Mulhouse Freiburg – just two miles out of the city. Frequent direct flights connect EuroAirport with over 60 destinations including most major airports across Europe and a few key destinations further afield, such as Canada, Russia and North Africa.

You can fly to Basel via EuroAirport year round from all the major London airports, plus a handful of other airports in the UK and Ireland. The range of flight options offered by low-cost and standard airlines makes Basel an attractive destination for both business travellers and holiday makers, regardless of budget.

Getting to and from EuroAirport

When arriving at EuroAirport, make sure that you leave the terminal heading for the right country. Because the airport is right on the border where Switzerland, Germany and France meet, EuroAirport is technically in France, but is run jointly by France and Switzerland, so there are separate French and Swiss parts of the airport. Exits from the baggage claim area are clearly signposted towards France or Switzerland.

Travelling between EuroAirport and Basel is quick and easy thanks to the city’s excellent public transport system. Direct buses take about 15 minutes to or from the city centre, and the tram network offers good connections to all parts of the city and surrounding areas. If you’re hiring a car, it’s about a ten-minute drive to the centre of Basel.

It’s good to know that everyone visiting Basel gets a free Mobility Ticket, giving you unlimited use of public transport for your whole stay (up to a maximum of 30 days). The only proviso is that you need to be staying in officially registered accommodation, but most of the main hotels are signed up to the scheme. You can pick up the Mobility Ticket when you check into your hotel, but before that you can use your hotel booking confirmation for a free journey to your hotel from EuroAirport.

Fly to Basel via Zurich

While EuroAirport is undoubtedly the closest option if you’re flying to Basel, you could also look at flights to Zurich when you’re planning your visit to the Basel area as it’s less than 90 minutes away by train and only hour by car along the A3 autobahn. There are hourly trains direct from Zurich Airport to the main Basel SBB railway station and regular trains that require a change at Zurich railway station.
