Nestling in the Vale of Glamorgan near Barry is Brynhill Golf Club, one of the top golf courses in the area, if not the whole of Wales. The facilities available here, which are not restricted solely to golf, are easily reached when booking a hotel in Cardiff.
The course opened in May 1921 and its inaugural match between two pairs of players was filmed and shown later at the local cinema. Developments and improvements continued through the century culminating in the opening of the new club house in 1984. The opening ceremony was conducted by comedian and film star Bob Hope, a big golf enthusiast who was visiting the Barry area at the time to revisit his childhood home.
Today, the course is par 72 for men, par 74 for ladies, with a mixture of par three, four and five holes. Its current layout, measuring 5,825 metres, was overseen by David Thomas, who also designed the Brabazon Course at the Belfry. The course is surrounded by parkland and mature trees, in the heart of the Vale of Glamorgan. The clubhouse is something of which the club is suitably proud, being well equipped with a well-stocked bar and selection of meals and snacks.
As well as the daily rounds for members and visitors, Brynhill Golf Club offers corporate packages and golf days, as well as conference facilities. Holding an event in a prestigious setting like this is sure to impress invited guests. The clubhouse has also become a popular venue in the area for weddings and other celebrations. The clubhouse’s function rooms can cater for events for between 12 and 120 people.
The club also boasts a golf pro shop. This is very well stocked with professional equipment, clothing and accessories, offering top brands such as Cobra, Puma and Under Armour, as well as being an official stockist for both Powakaddy and Garmin. The shop also offers professional fitting and repair services, such as regripping and reshafting, which can be carried out while golfers are recovering in the 19th hole.
The club’s resident professional, Matthew Owen, is a Level 3 PGA qualified coach with more than 10 years’ coaching experience. Lessons, from 30 minutes to one hour, are available throughout the year. It is invaluable to have the club’s professional coaching you, at whatever level you are at, because he has the knowledge and experience of the course to guide players around its hazards.
Whether you are Ryder Cup standard or a beginner with an embarrassing handicap, nonetheless a walk around this beautiful course will ensure that, no matter what your score, you enjoy your time here. Any golfer of any standard will enjoy a game at Brynhill Golf Club, not only for the challenging course, but for its beautiful surroundings in the Vale of Glamorgan. The course attracts visitors from around the country and further afield, and staying in a hotel in Cardiff is the perfect way to visit this wonderful parkland.
