Blackpool Central Library

Imposing Ionic columns and stained-glass windows embellish this architectural treasure composed of an art gallery and an Edwardian library.

Dating back to the beginning of the 20th century, the Blackpool Central Library is an impressive building and a reminder of the magic and innovation of the city’s heyday. The Edwardian Baroque architecture of the structure makes it stand out, elevating the library to an iconic status in the region. Take photos of the fascinating frontage that faces the street.

Notice the strong Ionic columns that flank the main portal and the intricate window layout of the façade. Its two tall stories are made of red brick that harmonizes with the pillars and decorative strips of stone. Gaze up at the octagonal dome that stands above a frieze displaying the name of the building in bold letters.

Enter the library through the door on the corner and browse the shelves and bookcases. The collection has a varied selection of books on local history as well as maps and references regarding the region. Notice how light penetrates the modern stained-glass windows and creates a warm and airy ambiance. A charming café serves snacks and drinks in the library.

Visit the Grundy Art Gallery that lies within this majestic building. It contains an array of exhibits related to regional history and contemporary art. The gallery shop offers artisanal jewellery and other items for sale.

Note that the building, which took 2 years to construct, was completed in 1911. The library is free to enter and opens Monday through Saturday from morning until late afternoon. It has free Wi-Fi access as well as computers with internet.

The Blackpool Central Library is in the central coastal area of the city. Take a train to the Blackpool North railway station and walk southwest for 5 minutes to get here. You can also get to the North Pier area via the tramway or bus system. See the Grand Theatre, the Blackpool Council and the Winter Gardens while you are in the area.
