Pocket Guide: Bedford Bedford Autodrome Hotels

The historic county of Bedfordshire offers a diverse range of attractions for visitors. While the major towns of Bedford and Luton are home to more than half of the county's population, there's a good deal more to be explored in the miles of rural land that surround them. One of Bedfordshire's most exciting attractions lies in the picturesque, rural village of Thurleigh, in the north of the county. Bedford Autodrome has served a number of purposes over the years, but it now exists as the county's number one racetrack. With plenty of great hotels in the surrounding area, the track's a big hit with tourists.

A Motorsport Experience

Whether you're a seasoned pro or a tentative amateur, it doesn't get much more exciting than the world of motorsport. Bedford Autodrome is the ideal setting for a track, occupying the former research site of the Royal Aircraft Establishment.

Since acquiring the site from the RAE Bedford, the Formula 1 driver Jonathan Palmer spent five years converting it into a first-class race track, making use of state-of-the-art laying techniques. With huge run off areas and a unique anti-clockwise circuit, the result is one of Britain's most exhilarating driving arenas.

Regular track days for both cars and motorbikes mean the site is popular with amateurs and pros alike.

More Than Just a Race Track

The 384 acres site of Bedford Autodrome comprises plenty more than just a place to drive. In addition to the shop, there's also a large Aerodrome, which houses both a functioning airstrip and a museum.

The Aerodrome Museum focuses on World War II, detailing the history of the airfield and the village of Thurleigh.
