"The Mercure Hotel in Hull is a lovely old building with decent parking and a nice, spacious entrance hall. The staff were friendly, and breakfast was okay. There were clearly lots of functions taking place, which gave the hotel a busy atmosphere, but thankfully we could not hear any of this from our room.
The room itself was a good size, but very basic. To be fair, the price does reflect that; however, the room was not very well maintained. The property is clearly old and now needs proper renovation. For example, the towel rail fell off when I put a towel on it, the toilet did not match the rest of the bathroom suite, and the tiles in the bathroom were cracked. It felt like parts of the room had been cheaply refurbished rather than properly improved.
The bed was squeaky, the TV was tiny, and the coffee facilities were very basic. Overall, it should probably be marketed more clearly as a budget hotel. That said, it has real potential. With some investment, better maintenance and a more thoughtful refurbishment, it could be so much more. It was obviously a busy hotel, which is a good sign, but it could definitely be better."
