Booked a double room for sole occupancy and was given a twin room. When I protested this was not what was booked I was fobbed off. I asked to speak to the duty manager and waited over 30 minutes before going back to reception. Duty manager was aware I’d asked to speak to them but decided I wasn’t her priority. Fobbed off that the hotel was fully booked and could not change my room and offer no alternative so agreed they would give me a refund and checked out. Went to another hotel. Now radio silence and struggle to get an answer from them with regards the refund. This hotel is tired and dated and the room I was given just felt unclean so I wasn’t prepared to stay there. She was quite avoidant and disinterested and would audibly sigh when walking away from customers. Extremely disappointed in the meals as most things were unavailable on a Friday night and there was only one steak cut option and only one chicken out of 3 on the menu available. None of this was told to us until ordering even tbough we were handed the menu 5 minutes earlier. We had to ask for water near the end of the meal as it wasn't offered even though it was for other diners. It was supposed to be the highlight of our holiday from Australia and it let usdown. I arrived earlier than the 3pm check in time so decided to pop in for a drink, there’s no ‘public bar’ where you can walk in and order a beer so had to be shown through to the bar which operates (a very slow) table service. I only had the one pint and got up and left after sitting with an empty glass for 15 minutes or so. £6.25 ‘house’ lager is the cheapest pint but a bit steep however there was a decent local selection of drinks. The woman on the desk was quite friendly and gave me a table next to the bar (didn’t help get a drink any quicker) oddly she turned up in the breakfast room the next morning with what appeared to be pyjamas and a shower cap on so maybe she lives there. Food menu was your average run of the mill stuff. A bit overpriced in my opinion and although I never ate at lunch, the menu was the same in the evening. I had a burger which was nothing special for the price and again drink service was slow at best so I never hung about long which is a shame as the bar area is quite a nice space other than the cobwebs and jumble sale items all over the place. Upon checking in, I was allocate a room which was in a cottage further up the room from the main building. Looked ideal from the outside although felt like a trek to get to it after a long day walking. The room itself was decent with no complaints on the facilities, they’ve missed a trick not putting bath in with a shower above it though."
