2 Star Hotels in Lake Maggiore

The old-world resorts of Lake Maggiore have a wealth of cultural attractions. To visit one of the lake’s highlights, from your two-star hotel take the boat from Stresa to Isola Bella, home to the 17th-century Palazzo Borromeo. This lavish palace is set in wonderfully elaborate gardens that cover ten tiers, where peacocks roam freely. Inside the palace are works of art by old masters including Titian and Rubens.

Stay in a two-star hotel on Lake Maggiore’s eastern shore to enjoy the view of Santa Caterina del Sasso, a Medieval monastery clinging to the high rock face. It’s easily reached by a ferry from Stresa, too. If your two-star hotel is in Verbania, lose yourself in the colourful grounds of Villa Taranto, a 19th-century villa bought in the 1930s by a Scottish captain, Neil McEacharn, who turned it into one of the most beautiful botanic gardens in Europe.

Eating on a Budget in Lake Maggiore

The rich cuisine of Piedmont and Lombardy is even tastier when you eat it in a lakeside restaurant. The alpine meadows produce some superb local cheeses, including pungent gorgonzola. Savour air-dried hams, gourmet salamis and cured meats including mortadella, accompanied by full-bodied red wines like Nebbiolo.

Things to Do in Lake Maggiore with Children

Take the kids back in time with a visit to the Museo Europeo dei Trasporti, a fascinating collection of 19th-century horse-drawn trams and carriages, locomotives, cars and even hot-air balloons.

For an exciting day out for the whole family, check out the Aquadventure Park near Baveno. The activity-packed adventure park has a climbing wall and a cyclocross circuit as well as cable slides and hanging walkways that wind through the forest. If you haven’t got your own bikes to explore the park further, you can hire them in the park. Afterwards, cool off in the large swimming where kids can zoom down water slides before returning to your two-star hotel in Lake Maggiore.
