Pocket Guide: Stresa

With its lakeside 19th-century villas and superb views, Stresa has been attracting writers and artists since the 19th century. It’s a place of timeless elegance that recalls the days of the belle époque. As a base, Stresa is a convenient place to stay thanks to its two ferry terminals that run services all over Lake Maggiore.

What to See in Stresa

Join the genteel crowd along Stresa’s waterfront promenade and stroll past the lakeside 19th-century and Art Nouveau villas. It’s hard to resist the allure of the cafes and restaurants that offer sublime views of the lakes and the mountains.

Stresa’s old town is a warren of narrow cobbled streets and attractive squares. Stop in Piazza Cadorna for a coffee or a gelato before heading to the beaches south of Stresa town centre. Along the way, you’ll see the cooling woods of the Parco della Villa Pallavinco, a 20-hectare park that is home to llamas, zebras and flamingos, among other exotic creatures.

Stresa hosts one of Italy’s most important classical music festivals, the Settimane Musicali di Stresa, which is held in historic venues not just in Stresa but also in other towns in Lake Maggiore and Lake Orta.

Where to Stay in Stresa

There’s a good choice of hotels in Stresa, many of which are along the lakeside and offer excellent views. Choose an old-world grand hotel with spa facilities, lavish gardens and an outdoor pool next to the lake, or a family-run bed and breakfast in the heart of Stresa old town. You could opt for a hotel near Stresa ferry terminal or further south towards the town’s beaches.

Boat Trips from Stresa

Facing Stresa are the islands that make up some of Lake Maggiore’s best-known attractions. The Borromean islands include the dream-like Isola Bella with its extravagant palace and landscaped gardens. There’s also Isola Madre, which has an opulent palace set in lush gardens.

Then there’s Isola dei Superiore, which is also known as Isola dei Pescatori as it used to be home to generations of fishermen. There aren’t any palaces here, but its relaxed atmosphere was enough to make it Ernest Hemingway’s favourite island near Stresa.
