Pocket Guide: Baveno

Tucked into the Gulf of Borromeo north of Stresa, the attractive town of Baveno makes an appealing base from which to explore Lake Maggiore. Its Art Nouveau landing stage is one of the most striking in the region and makes for a pleasant introduction to the town if you’re arriving by boat.

What to See in Baveno

Stroll around Baveno’s picturesque streets, where there are handsome 19th-century villas to admire. One of them, Villa Branca, hosted Queen Victoria back in 1879. On your visit, take in the views of the lake and the surrounding mountains from the waterfront promenade at Piazza Dante Alighieri.

One of Baveno’s most historic sights is the church of Santi Gervasio e Protasio, which has an 11th-century facade. It sits in a charming square of terracotta porticos covered with frescos, along with a 16th-century baptistery.

For a relaxing stay, head to the beaches on the northern edge of Baveno. There’s a beach club where you can chill out on a sunlounger or have lunch in the cafe. Continue further north and you reach the Aquadventure Park, which combines an adventure park with outdoor pools, making it a fun day out whatever your age.

Where to Stay in Baveno

The hotels in Baveno offer plenty of choice for a Lake Maggiore stay. Splash out on a luxury room in a grand four- or five-star hotel on the lakeside, where old-world elegance takes you back to the 19th century – but with modern comforts. Relax in the outdoor pool, where you can enjoy views of the lake. Or you might prefer to go for intimate, family-run hotels in the historic centre of the town, where all of the amenities are on your doorstep.

Boat Trips from Baveno

Take advantage of Baveno’s position on the lake and explore the region by boat. Hop on one of the regular ferries that go up and down the lake – some as far as Locarno across the border in Switzerland.

The small islands of Isola Madre and Isola Bella near Stresa are two of Lake Maggiore’s most beautiful attractions and are very easy to visit by ferry from Baveno.
