Pocket Guide: Verbania

Lake Maggiore’s largest town, Verbania, is made up of several appealing villages on the western shore of the lake. Pallanza and Intra make very convenient bases for exploring, as they have attractive waterfronts and ferry jetties for trips around the lake.

What to See in Verbania

Verbania’s most striking attraction is Villa Taranto, a 19th-century lakeside villa that was bought by a Scottish captain in 1931. A keen amateur horticulturalist, Captain Neil McEacharn turned the grounds into an enchanting botanical garden. It’s still a riot of colour, and is in a prime spot overlooking Lake Maggiore.

Head up the hill from Pallanza’s old town to visit Museo del Paesaggio, where you can see a collection of archaeological finds as well as works of art. From Pallanza you can see a tiny island, Isolino di San Giovanni, where the conductor Arturo Toscanini lived in a lavish villa during the 1930s and 40s. Next to Pallanza is the village of Suna which, like its neighbours, has a pretty waterfront promenade filled with cafes and happy promenaders.

When the weather warms, head to the beach at Suna, where there’s also a large public outdoor pool. Birdwatchers can get close to the local wildlife in the peaceful marshes of the Fondo Toce nature reserve.

Where to Stay in Verbania

Hotels in Verbania are full of charm and old-world style. Choose a Verbania hotel on the lakefront and enjoy gorgeous views of Lake Maggiore and the surrounding alpine mountains. Other hotels are in historic buildings and set in the heart of Verbania town centre. It’s easy to find a hotel within a short distance of Verbania major sights and the ferry jetties.

Boat Trips from Verbania

From the ferry ports in Pallanza and Intra, you can hop on a boat and explore the lake in a relaxed style. Boats regularly cross Lake Maggiore to the town of Laveno on the eastern shore.

In the gulf between Verbania and Stresa are the Borromean islands. These are some of the must-see sights in Lake Maggiore, especially the glamorous villas on Isola Madre and Isola Bella.
