Pocket Guide: Arona

Arona is right at the southern end of Lake Maggiore, just before the lake peters out into the Ticino River. As with many of the towns in Lake Maggiore, it has excellent rail links with Milan, making it a popular choice for a day trip from Italy’s fashion capital.

What to See in Arona

Arona hugs the shore of Lake Maggiore, where there are wide waterfront promenades to stroll along. One of the prettiest is Piazza del Popolo, where you get marvellous views of the Rocca Borromeo castle which looms over the town of Angera on the eastern side of the lake. If you’re in the mood to shop, check out the upmarket boutiques in Via Cavour.

Arona is surrounded by nature reserves and parks, with the huge Lagoni di Mercurago natural park and the Canneti di Dormelletto bordering the southern edges of the town. To the north is the Parco della Rocca Borromea, which rises above the town and features picturesque ruins.

For an unusual experience, head to the giant statue of San Carlo Borromeo just north of the town centre. This 114-foot statue is the symbol of the town – and because it’s hollow you can climb up into the statue’s head and take in the sweeping views of Lake Maggiore.

Hotels in Arona

There’s a wide variety of hotels in and around Arona. Choose an old-world hotel with a lakeside terrace for romantic dinners, or a hotel with a rooftop restaurant. Other hotels are within the historic centre of Arona, and you can find some that are conveniently near the ferry terminal and the railway station.

Boat Trips from Arona

It’s easy to explore other parts of Lake Maggiore by boat. Regular services go across the lake to the town of Angera, or you could take a boat up to the attractive town of Stresa. Boats even go as far as Locarno in the Swiss portion of the lake.

If you take a boat to Stresa, from there you can explore the small islands of Isola Madre and Isola Bella, both of which have lavish villas and gardens before returning to Arona.
