Booked it with little or no research on a whim while travelling in Italy - was pleasantly surprise. Situated in a great location right by the beach and the main street wherever everyone seems to congrogate, I thought it was a great spot!
Clean and well run hotel in a central location. Continental breakfast was sufficient and lunch or dinner was very good, with fresh local produce used and generous portions.
Freindly family run hotel and I have no hesitation in recommending it.
Ok. First the negative...The room was not as described on Expedia. I booked a room with 4 separate beds, and I got a double bed with two bunk beds (which were falling apart). The photos looked nothing like the room that I had. The bathroom had an odd smell to it, that wouldn't go away (there were also a ton of gnats). Also, the toilet...in order to flush it, you had to push the button close to 15 times.
Ok. Now the positive....The hotel is located in a central area and that makes it easy to walk anywhere. The breakfast the next morning was very good. Hotel staff was very nice and accommodating at breakfast. Other than that, it was disappointing.
We had a lovely week's holiday at the Hotel Excelsior. The staff couldn't have been more helpful, and we want to pay a particular thank you to the resident pianist and musician Enzo, whose brilliant keyboard skills enabled us to dance every evening in the beautiful lounge. He was even able to play requests and to play the theme music to Avanti, the film that attracted us to Ischia in the first place.
It was a very romantic setting, the pool is just stunning and everything so clean. We would upgrade to a sea-view room next time, but we had a very pretty small balcony overlooking the garden area. The restaurant was very expensive, although delicious food, so we ate out most evenings. Breakfast was superb, all tastes are catered for, and a beautiful way to start the day sitting out admiring the pool from the terrace. The beach is a bit tiny, but with private facilities, so very secluded. If you do go to Ischia, visit the Negombo spa, the Mortella gardens and the castle - but don't try an Ischian bus!!
