"Could be better"
Being in the hotel business myself, a couple of things let this hotel down. The staff did their job, but the Reception girls looked as though they wished to be elsewhere and there wasn't much of a welcome or any kind of conversation. My room was spacious and although the shower, hairdryer, etc was old, the room and bathroom were spotlessly clean. There was no safe in the room (which, in this day and age, there is no excuse for). Upon check-out, there was no conversation and not even a "how was your stay". The night staff member was bar man/security. He was efficient, but again, no warmth. The Red Lion could be an absolutely fantastic hotel with it being a charming place, but they need better staff.

"Lovely hotel in a lovely town"
I stayed there with my wife while I was in the area on business - I went to work and my wife caught up with friends. I can remember the hotel site from when it was Henley Brewery so it was particularly interesting for me to see the conversion and development. I have to say that, sorry as I was to see the brewery go, the hotel is a triumph and the rooms have been imaginatively converted to provide some comfortable yet quirky accommodation. Our room was over two levels, with a huge bathroom comprising a fantastic stand alone bath and excellent shower. The courtyard would have been a pleasure to have experienced if only the weather had been good enough and the bars and restaurant were cleverly laid out with some quaint nooks and crannies. One slight gripe, which is why my overall rating was "pleasing" rather than "excellent" - for the fairly high price of the room, I should have thought that breakfast ought to have been included, which it wasn't.

"Convenient for Sonning visiting"
Good overall but most disappointing no tea/coffee making facilities or mini bar in room considering very expensive for single person in double room. Food excellent although noisy mini kitchens on first floor when preparing early breakfasts.

"A lovely surprise"
The hotel surprised me; it's very well done, with pictures of Great Western Railway trains, and interior spaces that seem a bit mysterious, but are wonderfully comfortable, and carefully looked after. An excellent hotel, not the usual kind of place, which can be nice and comfortable, but better.

"Lovely rooms and delicious food"
We only stayed one night and arrived quite late, but thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Room was large and very clean, looking out over the pub garden. We dined in the restaurant and would highly recommend the food. Staff were all very friendly, although we had to wait a while in the morning to attract attention in order to check out. The only drawback was that in the room you could hear the music from the restaurant (quietly, but still audible) and some noise of them clearing at the end of the service. This was not a major issue, as it was all done by midnight, but might affect light sleepers who enjoy an early night. Similarly, I was woken by the noise of a baby crying (and parents talking very loudly) in the morning, so sound insulation between the rooms is not perfect. However, this was a very minor issue and would not stop me from staying at the hotel again, nor from recommending it to others. Also, it is nice to have breakfast included in the room rate, and a very tasty breakfast it was.

"Comfortable traditional style country hotel"
Arrived after 8pm when staff were busy with dinner but I was efficiently shown to my room upstairs in a part of the premises in which there were only two rooms. The room was comfortable with a modern, well-equipped en suite bathroom that looked as if it had been recently renovated. Although overlooking a busy country road the room was quiet, thanks to double glazing, and offered a good night's sleep with no noise or disturbance. The full English breakfast was adequate and cheerily served.
