We paid a grand total of about 10,000 yen for 3 people - a double bed apartment for my parents and a single bed apartment for myself. The rooms are immaculate and have spartan yet functional kitchens. It's basically like living in a bare-bones 1K apartment in Japan, for those of you familiar with Japan. I challenge any person to stay in a hotel in Kyoto for less than 10,000 yen during koyo (changing leaves) season. It probably won't happen.
Make no mistake, this is a maybe 25 year old apartment building that rents out apartments. It's not a backpacker's hostel. It's not a hotel. It has shared laundry facilities. The hallways smell like a 25 year old apartment building's hallways. The apartments do not.
However, for what you pay, it's better than any of the hostels I've stayed in in Kyoto, and almost as good as some of the business hotels I've stayed in in Kyoto, yet about half the price.
The staff are friendly and relaxed, and speak English fairly well. Free laundry.
The only real drawback was the location. It's close to Kinkakuji, but not much else. If you were using it as a base for sightseeing, you'd have to take a 30 or so minute bus or train ride in to a more central area.
it's kind of difficult to get to the place as it is kind of hidden, but I talked to the contact person of the place and she went to pick us up as we were just a few blocks away. It is a small house fully equipied with the basic stuff. It's a great place to stay, is really near a bus stop and not that far from a subway station, in really peaceful neiborhood
