Perfectly located in Kyoto's Gion district, Gion Hatanaka was the epitome of luxurious pampering - Japanese style. The kimono-clad staff was attentive to our every need and made us feel welcome. The hostess who served us (literally) throughout our one-night stay explained the protocol of shoes off and slippers vs toilet slippers, the lounging yukata and robe we were to wear, each course of the elegantly served dinner and subsequent breakfast, and the futons we slept on. Although some of the multitude of dishes served at each meal did not appeal to our Western taste, we were so impressed by the presentation (fresh flower garnishes and exquisite dishes of porcelain and crystal) and the highest quality of the various fish and other foods we DID enjoy. This was a once in a lifetime experience which was a definite high point of our trip to Japan.

Gorgeous restored townhouse gives the feel of traditional Japan, but with all the comforts you expect. Wonderful deep soaking tub. Comfortable bedding, air conditioning and bidet. The couple that owns and restored it are very helpful and kind and gave the entire Japan experience and Macha tea service.
My family stayed at Gion Maifukan in mid-May and had a wonderful experience. We stayed in room 405 which is one of their Japanese-style rooms. We found the room very spacious and comfortable. Komono-style robes were provided which we liked so much we purchased them for use once we got home. Gion Maifukan is a delightful hotel well situated in the Gion area of Kyoto. It was in easy walking distance to temples, shrines and shopping. The restaurant in the hotel served a very delightful breakfast that my family enjoyed. The employees spoke fairly good english and tried to meet our varied requests.
My wife and I had a great time at this Ryokan. It's A short walk away from some great sights im Higashiyama, the staff is very friendly, and the amenities are good. It's not super fancy by any means, but everything is very clean and the room was very nice looking - exactly what we wanted in a Ryokan.
Room was not ready at the time of check in. We were asked to wait 5 min then 5 min then 5 min. Staff tried calling cleaning staff to check but no one answered so they pretended that our room was just being made and would be ready in minutes. In the end we asked to leave our bags with reception and went out for a few hours. Toilet wasn't clean (nasty looking brown stain on toilet seat). We agreed to eco-cleaning of room which meant we could use same linens and towels. Next day they however also skipped making our beds which is not what the description of eco cleaning indicated. (spelled out that making of beds was still going to be done). Neither was the toilet cleaned. As usual staff have limited English skills and AC instructions etc are all in japanese characters. Room size was much better than other APA hotels we stayed at (Shibuya Tokyo and Tanamachi Osaka) and was better priced (Kyoto hotels are cheaper?). Location was good.
