I called for directions form the Shinkansen (Bullet Train) station and Rumi at the front desk not only spoke good English, but was very helpful and gave excellent directions on how to get to the hotel by subway. We were greeted warmly and they held our bags until check in as well as when we checked out until we lef Kyoto. The room was huge, on the top floor, I think it was 1001. We have two children and it is very hard to find one room that sleeps 4 people in most places in Japan, especially Tokyo. They require you to rent 2 rooms. The San Crane room we had had 4 large single beds, a couch, large bathroom and big sliding door closets. Very clean and comfortable. If we are ever in Kyoto again we would stay here in a heartbeat.
Definitely value for money- comfortable, clean, great location. 3 adults fit nicely in the room with a pullout bed you'd never know was a couch. As long as you're just looking for a nice place to rest your tired self after whole days of sight seeing, and not a place to dwell in and relax by the pool/gym/stay indoors in, this is highly recommended. I'd stay here again.
The room is very clean. (This is what I expect the most.) There are many affordable restaurants (850 to 1,200 yen/person for lunch or dinner) nearby. There are many local buses going directly (5 minutes) to/from the Kyoto station. A subway is about 5 minutes walk from the hotel. Facing the hotel is "Family Smart" which is small store where you can find all sorts of things such as shampoo, whisky, take-out foods, cakes, fruits, ... The hotel staff is very polite and helpful. I'd recommend this hotel to anyone (particularly to Canadians) who visit Kyoto.
I've stayed in other ryokans before, none of them is as good as Kagihei. The futong, the tatami, the toilet, everything about the room was perfect. The public bath was great too. It was my first time trying a Japanese public bath. I asked a staff how exactly I should use it before entering. No one else was there so I enjoyed the whole time myself, very relaxing! There was a small private bath in our room but I really wanted a true Japan experience so I chose the public one. The breakfast was delicious. They provided a large amout of different kinds of food, in a Kyoto style. We just couldn't finish that much. Last but not least, the owner couple and the staff were the kindest I've met. I really appreciate their services. We had two wonderful days in Kagihei, and would like to return whenever we come to Kyoto again.
