The original port and fishing village maintain an agreeable low-key buzz with good bars and restaurants, but it is the beaches that make Playa Blanca famous. West of the centre, on past the new and expanding fashionable Marina Rubicón, and a clutch of luxury hotels, lie the island’s finest golden white coves, known collectively as the Papagayo beaches. Three small cafes are the only development in this protected area.
