Sadly not the 5-star experience I expected
3 / 5 Okay
Firstly, this hotel was certainly designed to impress; it is an architectural masterpiece! Built to resemble a Canarian Village (with entrance through the "church", playing choir music and with lighted candles in the evening); the reception and lobby is inside a "Volcano" - quite unique! The rooms are large and tastefully decorated, although the bathrooms would benefit from refurbishment. Ours was on the 5th floor with a fabulous view of the marina. The bed was (UK scale) Super king sized and firm but comfortable.
However, a hotel is granted it's star-rating not just on its accommodation but on its facilities and service. I appreciate that hotels have suffered during this Pandemic ... the Volcan was less than 30% full and clearly operating with greatly reduced staffing. Most amenities were closed: only 1 (of 4) restaurants open for breakfast and dinner (no lunch service); only 2 pools; no bar - nowhere to buy drinks or snacks (even bottles of water), although free coffee/tea/soft drinks were provided in the afternoons between 4 and 7pm; no entertainment. We did not eat in the restaurant for dinner - only breakfast, which was buffet, with very limited choice.
Negative issues mainly on service which was very impersonal. No replenishing of water or tea/coffee in rooms; hotel slippers taken away after 3 days and not replaced; our key cards were deactivated by 11:45 on day of departure so we couldnt get back into our room to retrieve our luggage! Not a 5-star experience for us!
