The Five Boroughs Like a Local: Apartments in Staten Island
“Staten Island is often overlooked in favour of the more famous boroughs of New York – but that’s a mistake. From a glorious waterfront and an excellent bars and restaurant scene, to a smattering of arts and cultural attractions and some great neighbourhoods made for exploring, Staten Island has a lot to offer. These Staten Island apartments will give you the chance to discover the secrets of this fascinating borough.
Apartment in Landmark House in St George
———————————————–
The Staten Island Ferry is a New York institution. Completely free, the ferry between Manhattan and Staten Island takes 25 minutes and gives you the chance to enjoy the harbour and skyline views, not least the Statue of Liberty, as well as a beer and a hotdog on the way. The area around the ferry terminal in Staten Island is St George, a lively neighbourhood with some great bars and cafes, a picturesque ballpark and the National Lighthouse Museum.
Stay at this first floor apartment, which is housed in a historic building, and you’ll be within easy walking distance of St Georges restaurants and shops, as well as other neighbourhood attractions. The apartment has a bedroom, kitchen and separate living room, with television and DVD player.
Picturesque Apartment in Tompkinsville
———————————————
Just south of St George, Tompkinsville is another good spot within walking distance of the Staten Island Ferry. Nearby attractions include the National Lighthouse Museum and Silver Lake Park, and if you like your food, don’t miss the Little Sri Lanka neighbourhood and its restaurants, markets and shops. There are more options for eating and drinking around Tompkinsville Park, including the Flagship Brewing Company and its cavernous beer hall.
This Tompkinsville apartment has two floors and a garden for you to enjoy when the weather is nice. There is a kitchen, a library and dining area, and internet access to keep you connected.
Elegant and Luxurious House in Stapleton
———————————————–
Stapleton is a good option if you want to be close to St George and its attractions, but would also like to explore the rest of Staten Island. In Stapleton itself, Bay Street is the main area for restaurants, bars and shopping, and nearby you’ll find the Art Space @ Staten Island Arts and the SIABC Staten Island Artists Building for exhibitions and other cultural events. Head south from Stapleton for the boardwalk and other amusements along South Beach.
The elegant and luxurious house in Stapleton is close to Silver Lake Park and can sleep up to 12, making it a good choice if you’re travelling with a large family. The house has a kitchen, living and dining areas, and internet access.
Cosy and Luxurious House in New Brighton
———————————————–
On the north shore of Staten Island, across the water from New Jersey, New Brighton is where you’ll find Snug Harbor Dock and The Noble Maritime Collection, a museum devoted to maritime history, art and various artefacts. The farmers’ market at Richmond Terrace is also worth a look, and staying in New Brighton you’ll also be close to the Staten Island Ferry, and the museums, concert halls and restaurants of neighbouring St George.
Between the centre of New Brighton and Snug Harbor, this cosy and luxurious house has four bedrooms, kitchen and patio, making it a good option for families. For entertainment, there is a flatscreen TV in the living room and internet access.
Victorian Bed and Breakfast in West Brighton
—————————————————
South of Snug Harbor is the neighbourhood of West Brighton, which centres on the shops, bars and restaurants of Forest Avenue. West Brighton is between the Silver Lake Park and the Staten Island Zoo, and it is a short distance north to the Snug Harbor Cultural Center and Botanic Garden, where you’ll also find the Staten Island Museum and the Staten Island Children’s Museum.
Within this Victorian B&B there is also a studio apartment with a kitchen and fridge that overlooks the garden. Perks include a morning breakfast, free WiFi and a cosy fireplace.
Cottage in the Sky in Grymes Hill
———————————-
Grymes Hill is the second highest point in New York City, a residential neighbourhood known for its colleges and student population, as well as being close to St George and Tompkinsville for entertainment and nightlife. Next to Grymes Hill you’ll also find Clove Lakes Park, and from here it’s easy to explore the rest of Staten Island, including Historic Richmond Town, one of New York’s oldest neighbourhoods, and the attractions of Midland Beach.
The Cottage in the Sky is a third-floor apartment with kitchen and patio, cable television, living and dining areas, and internet access. The apartment building is a short walk from the park and Grasmere station.
