Things to Do in Udaipur District

Famed for its romantic natural setting on the shores of lake Pichola, Udaipur is one of India’s most visited cities, thanks to its white marble palaces, temples, scenic gardens and meandering streets. Until you’ve seen Udaipur from the lake, or from the Aravalli Hills above it, it’s difficult to fully appreciate the extent of its captivating beauty. As you traipse through an ancient bazaar, or watch a romantic sunset over the city from your hotel balcony, Udaipur will capture your imagination.

Areas & Neighbourhoods in Udaipur

Old City - When he founded Udaipur in the 16th century, Maharana Udai Singh II protected it with a wall six kilometres long. There are seven gates in the wall, and many of Udaipur’s most treasured historic landmarks are found within, such as the majestic City Palace complex and the Jagdish Temple. Though it is easily walkable, on a hot day you may prefer to get around by a breezy rickshaw.

Lake Pichola - So stunning is the natural beauty of the lake that much of Udaipur’s architecture, from its palaces to its hotels, has been built on its banks specifically with the intention of getting the best views. The lake has four islands, on one of which stands the spectacular Lake Palace, now a heritage hotel and considered among the most romantic in the world.

Ahar - Just outside Udaipur stand the Ahar cenotaphs, hundreds of monuments and tombs dedicated to the maharajahs of Mewar who founded the city. Besides being a major tourist destination and site of worship, Ahar is also a site of significant archaeological interest.

Shilpgram - Explore traditional rural homes in this artisans’ village a short distance from Udaipur. A variety of arts and crafts are on sale, and during high season regular dance and musical performances take place.
