The capital city of Himachal Pradesh, Shimla is located in the south-western ranges of the Himalayas around 2,200 metres above sea level. It is a lovely city and a popular tourist destination, particularly in the summer months, and is known for its beautiful Victorian architecture. There are a number of religious sights in Shimla, like the ancient Hindu Jakhoo Temple and the neo-Gothic Christ Church, which is one of the oldest churches in Northern India. Around 11kms from the city is the Tera Devi Temple, an impressive Hindu temple that sits atop a hill over 1,800 metres above sea level.
Just outside of the city is Summer Hill, which was once a residence of Mahatma Gandhi. This quiet town offers a peaceful escape from the city and is also home to the famous Indian Institute of Advanced Study. The State Museum sits at the top of Inverarm Hill in a Raj-style building and houses a collection of 10,000 artefacts from around the state.
Families will enjoy the Hip Hip Hurray Amusement Park that offers plenty of activities including golf, indoor rock climbing, boating and numerous rides.
