Enjoy a holiday full of action and adventure at any time of year on the mountains of a popular ski resort in southwest Colorado.
Pack your cold weather gear for the tall slopes of the Telluride Ski Resort. Here you can ski and snowboard over more than 2,000 acres (809 hectares) of skiable terrain, with runs for all abilities. Even if you’re not a skier, you will find plenty to see and do at any time of year.
Strap on your skis and enjoy the resort’s numerous downhill slopes or ski along cross-country trails on the valley floor. Participate in other cold-weather activities away from the ski runs. Go ice climbing up Bridal Veil Falls, a 365-foot-tall (111-metre) frozen waterfall. Snowmobile along miles of groomed trails or travel through the mountainous terrain on a sleigh ride. Take the children to Firecracker Hill for sledding. For ice skating, go to the large ice rink at Telluride Town Park.
Stay in the town of Telluride, where you’ll find Victorian-era homes, boutiques and restaurants. Alternatively, make Mountain Village your base. It is located at an elevation of 9,500 feet (2,896 metres) and can be reached via the Telluride Gondola. This is a free 13-minute cable car ride.
Telluride’s snow season starts at the end of November and concludes at the beginning of April. The area is also popular throughout spring and summer for its outdoor activities. Hike or bike mountain trails, embark on a difficult four-wheel-drive off-road tour to the ghost town of Tomboy or ride the rapids of the Colorado River. Go fly fishing on the San Miguel River and swing your clubs at Telluride’s mountain resort golf club.
Reach Telluride by flying into Montrose or Telluride regional airports. Then take a shuttle service, taxi or rental car to your accommodation. Although you can get around by rental car, both Telluride and Mountain Village are pedestrian friendly once you arrive. Many visitors use the cable car to travel between the two. You can also make use of the free Galloping Goose bus service to experience the awesome scenery.
