Pocket Guide: Sete

Book a Hotel in Sete

Sete is one of the most colourful towns along the French coast, with stunning views over its busy port. Though Sete is fast becoming a destination seaside resort in its own right, most tourists still visit the city on a day trip from Montpellier. The train ride from Montpellier’s centre takes only 15 to 20 minutes, so pack a picnic and some sunscreen and make your way out to this popular coastal retreat.

If you’d rather stay in Sete, there is a variety of two- and three-star hotels to choose from. If you’re watching you’re budget, you should look inland. Just a few minutes’ walk away from the shore, you will find comfortable hotels with friendly multilingual staff to help you navigate your way around town.

Hotel on the Sete coast are a little pricier, but the magnificent views of the sea are worth it. Book a hotel with a private terrace and watch the boats sail into port, or choose a hotel in Sete with a swimming pool and wooden deck chairs to help you soak up the sun.

Climb Mont Saint-Clair

Sete was built on Mont Saint-Clair, and you can hike up to the summit to enjoy panoramic views from the highest point in town. The hike up is a bit steep, so you could use the regular bus service that runs to the top. There is also parking if you have rented a car or bought your own.

Water Jousting in Sete

Sete is known for its unique cultural traditions, the main one being water jousting. The town held its first water jousting tournament in 1666 and now hosts this quirky sport every year during the Saint Louis festival.

The basics of water jousting are simple. Two people stand on wooden platforms attached to opposite boats and use their lances to knock their opponent into the water. A traditional jousting tune is played from the boats, then a brass band starts to keep the energy going. Fans wave their flags high in support of the winner, and the day ends with festivities in Sete’s streets.
