Nottingham Council House

Nottingham Council House
Nottingham Council House

With its imposing design and important role in local politics, this architectural gem earns its place as a key emblem of the city.

The Nottingham Council House is a domed city hall with a façade comprising an imposing pediment and thick columns. Overlooking the central Old Market Square, the neo-baroque structure dates back to the 1920s. Arrive at sunset to see the golden rays of the day’s last light gracing the majestic dome.

Spot the elegant clock, known locally as Little John, based in the core of the dome. From the other side of Old Market Square, you can see the building reflected in the surface of a fountain. Look up at the structure at night, when its dome and pillars are illuminated in a variety of colors.

Stretching across the base of the front of the building is an impressive colonnade that leads to the entrance. Step inside and watch some of the political meetings and debates unfold. These decision-making gatherings are open to the public, allowing a glimpse of political proceedings in the city.

Some rooms can only be seen during a private event or as part of a free guided tour on select Sundays throughout the year. Among the highlights is the Ballroom, with its gold-leaf pillars, art deco light features and walnut oak and ebonized pear wood floor. Next door, marvel at the Italian marble fireplace in the Dining Room, which often serves as a cocktail reception area.

The Council House is one of the most iconic buildings in Nottingham, where all manner of royals and celebrities have been hosted. Today, rent the hall for private events. It is a popular wedding reception venue too.

Find the Nottingham Council House in the center of the city. Ride the tram to the Old Market Square station and walk east for less than 1 minute to get here. Make sure to see other nearby attractions such as the Nottingham Playhouse, the Bodega Nottingham and the National Justice Museum.
