Palacio de Bellas Artes showing a park, a statue or sculpture and heritage architecture

Experience the infectious energy, superb culinary scene, intriguing museums and top-rate cultural and historic sights of Mexico’s sprawling, cosmopolitan capital.

Mexico City has been an important place for centuries, from a meeting point for ancient civilisations to one of the 21st-century’s most intriguing destinations, which manages to be at once home to 20 million people and still maintain an attractive and fun atmosphere that at times borders on the relaxed. The key to enjoying a holiday in Mexico City is not to try and do it all at once, but to take some time to explore the many and varied neighbourhoods that each has its own feel and atmosphere.

Start your holiday adventure at the heart, in Zocalo Square. This iconic public space is enormous and imposing and is surrounded by some of Mexico City’s most important sites, such as the Palacio Nacional, the Metropolitan Cathedral, and the archaeological remains of the Aztec Templo Mayor, which tells some of the story of the fascinating history of this part of the world.

If you want some nightlife on your holiday in Mexico City, then Zona Rosa is the neighbourhood for you. It’s packed with bars and restaurants, and is the centre of Mexico City’s gay scene.

For shopping, head for Polanco. Enjoy upmarket boutiques and stores before settling in at a top-notch cocktail bar in this corner of town. The Colonia Roma is the place to head for a more laid-back vibe, and this bohemian district has lots of interesting cafes and independent shops to explore.

Base your holiday at a hotel on the main boulevard of Mexico City. Paseo de la Reforma has some of Mexico City’s most striking monuments and tallest buildings and links the historic centre with the attractions of Chapultepec Park.

Along Paseo de la Reforma, you will see the impressive Angel of Independence Monument and the Monumento a los Ninos Heroes. In the park, you will find the National History Museum, housed in the Castillo de Chapultepec, and the world-class National Anthropological Museum, well worth an explore.

Whether your holiday in Mexico City focuses on its art and the culture, the history, the nightlife or the shopping, you are sure to have a wonderful city break or getaway.
