World Famous Estadio Azteca Football Stadium
Football fans around the world know the Aztec Stadium. This 87,000-capacity arena is the largest stadium in Mexico and has been making history since it opened in 1961. In 1970 it hosted the epic World Cup Final between Brazil and Italy, and it had the same honour again in 1986 as a Diego Maradona-led Argentina side beat West Germany to claim football’s biggest prize.
There are commemorative monuments outside the stadium to both the 1970 Game of the Century as well as Diego Maradona’s goal against England en route to the 1986 final. The Estadio Azteca is also the home ground of the football team Club America, one of the most popular and successful club sides in Mexico.
