Excellent, basic hotel, close to underground.

Posted 15-Apr-2017
This is a minimum hotel, that perfectly suited our needs. The owners of the hotel were kind and helpful with directions, suggestions, and helping us look up information. It's easy access to the underground made, getting anywhere so simple. At the end of a long day of sightseeing, this was a quiet area of town, with plenty of restaurants and a few little stores close by.

Ergonomically challenged

Posted 17-Mar-2017 on Hotels
The Mandalay Picton is tall thin period building with a lot of narrow stairs (no lift) & each return of the stairs is adorned with a hoover or some other domestic utensil. My room was clean apart from the mould on the back of shower curtain. Good hotel keeping is about getting small details right. This is not a good hotel. At this price one expects uncomfortable beds & foam pillows & these were in evidence at the Mandalay Picton. The ergonomics of the room were awful: a single bed was jammed across the front of the built-in wardrobe so I had to hang my clothes on the multiple hooks on the back of the door (bring your own coat hangers) was the first annoyance. The double bed was hard up against the only radiator in the room & the window & squeezed between the bed & the wall of the bathroom was a small, scruffy chest on which a tiny television sat. In order to see the television one needed to lie on the bed & squint, very uncomfortable. The other ergonomic annoyance was that almost immediately above the smallest, thinnest bathroom sink I have seen was a cupboard. I found shaving & brushing my teeth challenging without hitting my head on the cupboard. I failed in this endeavour, dear reader, & have the cut on my head to show for it! The Mandalay Picton also advertises that it provides breakfast from 7 a.m. but on both mornings of my stay the dining room was locked with no lights on anywhere at the appointed hour so I cannot pass judgement on the breakfast. A poorly tun hotel.

Thank you for your stay. This is a two star tourist hotel in central London where most guest are happy to find a clean room with freshly cooked breakfast , homely atmosphere and most of all friendly owners willing to assist in anyway we can. As you correctly stated it is not for a business trip or people in London for work as there are many hotels in the area offering those services like Hilton. Once again thank you for your opinion. Lots of traffic noise from the street, draught from the window, uncomfortable bed, and the tiniest ever bathroom. No fire alarm systems inside the room or air conditioning, wifi did not work. Still relatively warm inside (in December), clean sheets, non-smoking, friendly staff of Indian origin.

May I just clarify that the wifi is offered free in the reception area and breakfast room. Guest are welcome to use it if they are able connect in their rooms. I am of Burmese origin and from Norway for your information. Thank you for your custom.

Thank you for your stay with us. Most the rooms did not not have shower and toilet attached in the early days when these town houses were turned into small hotels. Only a few years ago small toilet pods were installed according to the room sizes. We do have afew rooms with larger toilets. Please kindly contact us before you reserve a room next time.

Thank you for your stay. We are not Indians and do not eat Indian food. So I can not understand how you got the smell of the Indian food although I can not say that Indian food smells bad as it is the largest selling food in the United Kingdom. Regarding the the toilet , yes it is small as there were no en-suite in the rooms in the earlier days. These toilets were designed for small hotels and student hostels in order for the occupants to have private facilities in their room.

Lovely staff, they were more than happy to help with any of our queries and also made some suggestions for us whilst on our stay. We had a family room that slept 5. The cleanliness was good, towels and soap were provided pp too. Room was nice and warm. Good size. Room & bathroom could do with update on the decor as quite dated. Cooked Breakfast could do with a rethink?? It wasn't really for my tastebuds. defo not the worst I've had though and I sufficed with Jam on toast. And again, Lovely people who run the B&B which is a massive Yes on my list.
