The best area to stay in Kastellos is the village centre, particularly around the main square, for its convenience and access to local life. This area is the heart of Kastellos, offering a genuine taste of Cretan village living. The main square is a focal point, often bustling with locals, and you'll find a selection of traditional tavernas and a small shop for essentials nearby. The streets are generally narrow and winding, characteristic of a mountain village, and many accommodations offer lovely views of the surrounding countryside.Couples looking for a peaceful escape will find the village centre ideal. It's a place to relax, enjoy authentic Greek food, and experience a slower pace of life. You can spend your days exploring the local area or simply unwinding on a terrace with a view. For those who appreciate a bit more seclusion while still being close to amenities, staying slightly outside the immediate village centre, perhaps a short walk or drive, might be preferable.

The best time to visit Kastellos is during the shoulder seasons of May, early June, and September to early October. These months offer pleasant weather for exploring Crete without the intense heat and larger crowds of the peak summer. You'll find the temperatures warm enough for swimming and enjoying the outdoors, yet comfortable for hiking or visiting archaeological sites.Couples often appreciate these times for a more relaxed and intimate experience, with fewer families around. The beaches are less crowded, and you can enjoy dining out without needing reservations quite as far in advance.Families travelling with younger children might also find these periods ideal, as the milder temperatures are more suitable for little ones than the scorching mid-summer heat.
