Picked this hotel more or less at random, and loved it. If you're looking for modern, clean lines and minimalist Scandinavian furnishings, keep looking. This place is OLD, and as a result tends to be a bit dark and well used, but it's also loaded with atmosphere. The ceilings, walls and floors are uneven, there are small staircases in unexpected places, and it creaks. It goes back to the 13th century, and the decor is appropriately medieval. BUT, the staff are really friendly, helpful and appear to care that you're enjoying their hotel. The breakfast was freshly prepared and delicious, and the restaurant is good enough to be popular with non-guests. The best bit from our point of view is what they've done with the garden; it's a stunningly atmospheric place to sit out in the evening enjoying a cool drink after a hot, tiring day on the Devon coast.
It's not everyone's cup of tea, but we loved it; suffice to say that our only "complaint" was the lack of a hanger on the back of the bathroom door.
