Pocket Guide: Carrickfergus Blackhead Path Hotels

If walking in beautiful scenery and enjoying sea air and breathtaking views is your idea of a perfect holiday activity, then the Blackhead Path, just outside Carrickfergus, is for you. Choose from one of the conveniently located hotels in and around Carrickfergus, all within easy driving distance of the path, and book through Expedia for a great deal on your room.

Whether you prefer a small guesthouse close to the promenade, or a grand hotel near the cliffs, Carrickfergus has the ideal place for your stay. And for anyone who loves the coast, it has a range of wonderful marine attractions to keep the whole family happy.

Walking the Blackhead Path

The walk is around two to three miles long. It begins at the yacht club at the far end of the town, and passes the brightly painted B&Bs along the seafront, before taking you along the delightful promenade and then out of town onto the coastal path itself.

The concrete coastal path, a circular walk, is a mixture of easy-going, level coastal path with woods and fields beside you, a steep cliff path and a rocky, ragged coastal path under the cliffs.

The wide selection of shrubs, succulents and flowers provides an exquisite environment in which to walk. There is also a vegetable garden on the upper level behind the house, complete with greenhouse and vine, and in the summer tomato and cucumber. This garden is about an acre in size and is lovingly tended by an elderly gentleman.

Onward and if fit (if not, keep to the flat! ), take the upward path to the left - from the top of the rise you can admire the views over to Bangor and the Copeland Islands, and the Isle of Man. Further to the left you might spot Ailsa Craig and Scotland, if the mist is not down. Watch out for peregrine falcon and kittiwakes hunting and floating over the sea and cliffs. On a hot day you just might be lucky to spot a lizard darting across your path, or maybe even a dolphin frolicking in the waves out to sea.

Admire the views from the lighthouse then it is down the steps on the other side to ground level to play pirates among the coves, inlets and caves, before completing the route. If you’re thirsty, or you’ve worked up an appetite, there is an excellent tea room by the car park which has stunning views out to sea.
