Nice Hotel with good views

Posted 21-Nov-2016
Pros: Clean comfortable
Cons: Breakfast
Location: Set in countryside not far from Newbury
Nice hotel, however it would have been a lot better if the car park had been lit. We arrived approx 17.00hrs - very dark and the car park has large pot holes full of water which due to the lack of lighting very difficult to see. Also uneven ground and not good for people with walking difficulties. The hotel itself was very warm comfortable and clean. Breakfast could have been better organised- constantly running out of hot food which was replaced, but not all at the same time - for eg hot bacon but no eggs, by the time the eggs arrived the bacon was cold.

Weekend away

Posted 24-Oct-2016
Pros: Grounds to look upon and size of bed.
Cons: Thin and scratchy 1 towel and hand towel in bathroom, 1 set small shampoo/ body wash for 2 people, toilet paper thin & harsh, room temp turned v.high.
Location: About 7 miles from newbury race course
Stayed in main hotel area, fabulous grounds but room was very old fashioned with so much large imposing furniture. Bed was 2 beds together, but comfortable. Staff very pleasant. Check out was extremely slow; if there is a queue of 5/6 people, a colleague should come to help. Prestige price but basics for the bathroom were very limited. Wifi dropped most of time and hairdryer was a travel/style.

Quiet location chosen for our wedding anniversary. At check in offered change of room away from two parties, which was welcome. Room clean and spacious. Dinner was really good quality, with a tinge of disappointment that desserts were not available because of the 160+ guests for the parties. However a complimentary ice cream was on offer, which went down well. Breakfast was good with plenty on offer. Friendly staff and we would certainly come back again.

A quality hotel in need of some serious attention

Posted 10-Oct-2016 on Hotels
Superb location & wonderful feature fireplaces etc, what a shame that it was let down by the cleanliness of the room. Room 77 was in an perfect location with to opening windows, however there was a damp, musty, doggy smell upon entering the room. There were several large flies flying around & several dead ones on the window sills. The windows were filthy as were the net curtains, paint was pealing from them & they were black with mildew. Then to the toilet, the seat had dirty stains on it, the bowl was had a dirty black ring around it at the water level & the outer toilet bowl was filthy & stained. There were also stains on the mattress protector which were visible through the sheet. On the positive side the room was well equipped with a coffee machine & safe etc, breakfast was excellent as were the staff. To sum up this is or has been a quality hotel but is need of some serious attention especially room 77.

Pros: the breakfast was good, staff were ok, nice location.
Cons: Rooms weren't cleaned properly, dead spider not hoovered up! Toilet seat didn't stay up. Shower was far too hot.

I think the espresso maker in the room was broken (plugged in and switched on, buttons didn't illuminate). The Wi-Fi coverage was good and speeds good for the location. Once the cleaners had attended I think they left the room window open whilst working, which is great for fresh air, but it unfortunately lead to dozens of flies trapped in the net curtain, some dead, others dying and occasionally buzzing loudly in efforts to escape. They were so numerous I didn't attempt to open the window as this would require moving the curtains and letting at least some into the room where they'd no doubt keep me from sleeping. The hotel staff seemed concerned about allowing my colleague and me to eat in the restaurant without booking due to "not wanting to overwhelm the kitchen". When we ate, there were around 3 tables occupied of at least 15. They had run out of around three menu items from a dozen or so, on a Wednesday. It was around £12 for a main and I enjoyed the chicken on the first night and steak on the second (a good medium rare). The food was good quality. Pheasants and deer roam the grounds so be on the lookout for that if you're lucky enough to get a room with a balcony.

nice hotel but seems penny pinching

Posted 26-Sep-2016
Pros: Room nice, shower good, Friendly efficient staff, lovely location and views, good food.
Cons: Better toilet paper Tea and coffee tray placed on the side in view Separate shampoo and conditioner A towel each in the bathroom
Location is beautiful. Room was attractive , spacious clean big comfortable bed and on first glance lovely. Hover when using it , I have just a few gripes really. I arrived and needed to change for a wedding . Firstly the lighting in the bathroom and bedroom is awful for trying to put on make up. Bathroom lighting is over head and harsh and I couldn't see a thing to put my make up on and bedroom lighting is shaded and to the side of the mirror. In the end had to turn my phone light on to solve the problem. Bathroom toilet paper is thin and rough and instead of a separate shampoo and conditioner they provided a two in one which wasn't very conditioning so I then couldn't even get an afro comb through my hair ( shoulder length, fine and straight ) . Lastly on the bureau is a menu for room service including tea and coffee. However there was also limited tea and coffee facilities in the room but the tray containing everything was underneath the luggage rack shelf almost hidden, rather than out on the side where it could be seen. We have booked a double room ( lovely super king bed) but only towels for one were placed in the bathroom, we had to hunt and find the additional towel still in a plastic bag in the wardrobe. Finally a large wedding party stayed over but they ran out of cups for tea at the breakfast buffet and there was a small 4 slice toaster to make your own toast that was slow and could not cope with demand. Food however was very good.

Nice venue, but small touches let it down

Posted 11-Sep-2016 on Hotels
Stayed overnight as going to a BBOWT bat talk. Nice hotel and polite staff, but let down by small touches. eg. No shampoo/shower gel in room; 2 towels only for family of 4; coffee machine not working at breakfast; spillage on floor with wet towels and a "danger of slipping" sign just left there in the middle of the floor throughout breakfast; near-empty fruit juices at breakfast; no eggs available in fried breakfast area. As I say, it's a nice hotel. It was just the small touches that you noticed. Perhaps short-staffed that weekend or maybe busy with the wedding?

Charitable thought- a one off bad day?!

Posted 09-Sep-2016 on Hotels
Couldn't get anything to eat - from either restaurant or room service. I think a wedding swamped them or maybe someone went sick but not good enough. We enquired before 6pm so not just as restaurant was closing. Manager put us off room service saying it would be a long delay if at all. No help or suggestions where to go etc. A bag of rubbish from previous occupant greeted us in our room. This was a poor experience by any standard. Maybe a one off?
