Quiet and comfortable

Posted 18-Apr-2017
A nice quiet stay but possibly better suited to adults and conferences/weddings. I stayed with my two tween girls who felt somewhat stifled by the environment. The scenery, hotel and landscape however is beautiful.

beautiful views

Posted 10-Apr-2017
Pros: The views
Cons: The service, don't advertise services you don't provide
Location: Newbury town for shopping Highclere castle worth a visit
stay was disappointing, arrived at the weekend and we had booked a privilege room, unfortunately for us we were above the function room and a wedding reception was in full swing until the early hours unable to get to sleep. Upgraded room was meant to include unlimited movies which it didn't. No hot water from the shower, extractor fan in the bathroom didn't work and the newspaper again included in the package didn't happen, because they don't have papers at the weekend!!! The views were pretty but i would have rather have gone to a Travelodge and banked the extra money this room cost.

Seriously hard bed and pillows

Posted 06-Mar-2017
In general the hotel was very nice and most of the staff were wonderful, it was down a very long lane which was quite flooded when we drove down it in pouring rain, something to consider perhaps. Our main issue was that the bed wasn't comfortable, the pillows were very very hard and our sleep suffered for it.

Decent hotel but tad pricey.

Posted 18-Feb-2017
When we arrived there was no one at reception as they were in the office out back. Check in went fine until they asked if they could charge £60 on my credit card as we had booked dinner with them that night. We were able to swerve that and just pay for what we ate. The room was really far away from the main area which was hard for my fiancée to walk as he suffers with chronic pain and club feet and we had asked for a room nearer the entrance. The room itself was ok but there was NO overhead lighting and it took ages to work out which light switches belonged to which lamp. The place was pretty clean but there was an orange stain on the bedsheets near the headboard. It was quite quiet which was nice until we went to have dinner. We booked and ordered for 8:15pm and didn't get our drinks for 45 min. We didn't get our starters for another 15 min after that. The host apologised and gave us a free drink. People who came in after us got their food before us!! Also they did not have any steak sirloin left but didn't tell us that until 10 minutes after we ordered. Starters were ok. Mains were nice. Desserts were very nice (I had sticky toffee pudding, my fav). The pillows were your average flat ones and I didn't sleep very well as the bed was two twins pushed together. Overall, it was located in a good place for what we were going to see the next day (Highclere Castle) but I wouldn't be tempted to go back.

Lovely parkland location with lots of wildlife

Posted 16-Feb-2017
Pros: Convenient location very close to A4 but quiet with lovely views and in extensive grounds. Plenty of lounge areas and welcoming log fire.
Cons: Need to use another member of staff to help the one waitress serve the evening meal to a party of six.
Location: Not a great deal to do nearby.
As the hotel was quiet there was only one waitress to serve our party of six our evening meal. This did mean that there was a long gap between the first and last people being served their main courses. The food was excellent although not everything on the menu was available. At breakfast there was no table for six laid ready but two tables were put together. A cooked breakfast was available from the kitchen although scrambled egg on toast could only be provided by making your own toast. It was made very clear that we needed to vacate the table at 9.30 am prompt when the breakfast service ended.

lovely parkland setting

Posted 19-Jan-2017
Pros: grounds and building
Cons: car park signs and lighting are poor , food and restaurant expensive for service and facilities offered
poor lighting in car park makes the large water filled potholes a hazard when on foot , a dozen or more british gas vans and their occupants staying as guests made us wonder if we were at a budget hotel, the total lack of normal butter for breakfast , the general poor service . waiting time and facilities for evening meal did not impress, if we had not paid a total of £350 for two nights stay and the building, grounds and room ,had not been so good we may have been convinced we really were at budget premises

We spent to nights at the hotel. There was a warm welcome and somebody on the desk at all times.

We we extremely disappointed with the staff's lack of knowledge. We asked two staff members separately if they had an American adapter plug. They said yes and it was £10 to hire- we said surely you mean a deposit but they both insisted we had to pay £10. We we checked out we mentioned that we thought it was exorbitant and were told it was only a deposit. So are the staff so badly trained or were they going to keep the cash. We had a further problem again on checkout when we had two food items charged to our room when we hadn't eaten anything at the hotel? Another error or something more sinister? Finally when we checked into our room there were two pairs of socks and there were four drawers with no handles on.
