Superb surroundings for a restful break.

Posted 20-May-2017
First impressions of a room supposed to be a bit better than the standard was disappointing. It was dingy without the dull light on and one bed side lampshade was awry and could not be straightened. The balcony outside of the netted French windows was so dirty it could not have been used even if the weather was conducive enough to use it. The bed was large and very comfortable and the room well appointed including a large TV. The en suit Bathroom was spacious and clean but only one set of towels was visible until it was pointed out on enquiry that a second set was in plastic bag in a wardrobe, why ? The limited menu was not enough to satisfy a visitor who untended to stay for more than two nights. The Orangery restaurant was excellent due to the beautiful view of the trees, lawn, cows in the field and the hills to the South over the valley. The staff were excelent !

A lovely position and location.!

Posted 16-May-2017
Pros: Otherwise Good
Cons: Breakfast organisation !
Location: Excellent !
We hoped for a quiet restful weekend. Friday on arrival, unfortunately we landed in the turmoil of a raucous and loud wedding party. The unruly behaviour of children during the evening and late into the night, running in and out of doors close to our room was unacceptable in the his experience and did mar our initial enjoyment and our anticipation of what we had expected. it was a shame because the Hotel does its best to make a stay comfortable and enjoyable. Our 'Privilege Room' on entry was disappointing. Tired and without the very dim lighting looked dreary. The staff did offer an alternative which was no different. The room needed a make over and the balcony was not fit to use due to the deck and the furniture being very dirty but the weather precluded us using it anyway. The Breakfast set up needs reorganising !!

Lovely hotel but needs some care and attention

Posted 27-Apr-2017
Pros: The bedrooms are big and the bathrooms too and the bed is very comfortable.
Cons: Just needs a little care and attention. The balconys need to be swept and kept tidy, light bulbs checked etc
Location: Newbury Races
Always a lovely stay. The hotel is very popular at weekends with weddings and therefore, is very busy. If you don't mind loud music until 12.30am in the morning then that's fine. They do have a lot of offers on and I must stay the Staff are so helpful and friendly. The beds are comfortable and everywhere just needs a little tender loving care. My friend had a Privilege Room and the little balcon really needed a good sweep and clean. It would have made things much better. The food is delicious but on a bit on the pricey side and you really don't get a lot for your money. All in all a good place to stay but weekends are a little hectic if there is a wedding on.

Quiet and comfortable

A nice quiet stay but possibly better suited to adults and conferences/weddings. I stayed with my two tween girls who felt somewhat stifled by the environment. The scenery, hotel and landscape however is beautiful.

beautiful views

Posted 10-Apr-2017
Pros: The views
Cons: The service, don't advertise services you don't provide
Location: Newbury town for shopping Highclere castle worth a visit
stay was disappointing, arrived at the weekend and we had booked a privilege room, unfortunately for us we were above the function room and a wedding reception was in full swing until the early hours unable to get to sleep. Upgraded room was meant to include unlimited movies which it didn't. No hot water from the shower, extractor fan in the bathroom didn't work and the newspaper again included in the package didn't happen, because they don't have papers at the weekend!!! The views were pretty but i would have rather have gone to a Travelodge and banked the extra money this room cost.

Seriously hard bed and pillows

Posted 06-Mar-2017
In general the hotel was very nice and most of the staff were wonderful, it was down a very long lane which was quite flooded when we drove down it in pouring rain, something to consider perhaps. Our main issue was that the bed wasn't comfortable, the pillows were very very hard and our sleep suffered for it.

Decent hotel but tad pricey.

Posted 18-Feb-2017
When we arrived there was no one at reception as they were in the office out back. Check in went fine until they asked if they could charge £60 on my credit card as we had booked dinner with them that night. We were able to swerve that and just pay for what we ate. The room was really far away from the main area which was hard for my fiancée to walk as he suffers with chronic pain and club feet and we had asked for a room nearer the entrance. The room itself was ok but there was NO overhead lighting and it took ages to work out which light switches belonged to which lamp. The place was pretty clean but there was an orange stain on the bedsheets near the headboard. It was quite quiet which was nice until we went to have dinner. We booked and ordered for 8:15pm and didn't get our drinks for 45 min. We didn't get our starters for another 15 min after that. The host apologised and gave us a free drink. People who came in after us got their food before us!! Also they did not have any steak sirloin left but didn't tell us that until 10 minutes after we ordered. Starters were ok. Mains were nice. Desserts were very nice (I had sticky toffee pudding, my fav). The pillows were your average flat ones and I didn't sleep very well as the bed was two twins pushed together. Overall, it was located in a good place for what we were going to see the next day (Highclere Castle) but I wouldn't be tempted to go back.

Lovely parkland location with lots of wildlife

Posted 16-Feb-2017
Pros: Convenient location very close to A4 but quiet with lovely views and in extensive grounds. Plenty of lounge areas and welcoming log fire.
Cons: Need to use another member of staff to help the one waitress serve the evening meal to a party of six.
Location: Not a great deal to do nearby.
As the hotel was quiet there was only one waitress to serve our party of six our evening meal. This did mean that there was a long gap between the first and last people being served their main courses. The food was excellent although not everything on the menu was available. At breakfast there was no table for six laid ready but two tables were put together. A cooked breakfast was available from the kitchen although scrambled egg on toast could only be provided by making your own toast. It was made very clear that we needed to vacate the table at 9.30 am prompt when the breakfast service ended.

Nice quiet hotel

Nice quiet hotel. Lovely room. Dinner good. Breakfast average. Only downside was the restaurant, this appeared to be a conservatory. Poorly lit (unable to read paper at breakfast, could only just read menu) and cold (even waiting staff had cardigans on).
