The Devonshire Arms Baslow

The Devonshire Arms Baslow
3.5 star property
Bakewell
8.6 out of 10, Excellent, (115 reviews)
"Lovely clean room, and comfortable bed. The bar area was nice with a lot of choice. We ate at the restaurant- food was lovely but the service was poor. After we had our starter, it took over an hour for our mains to arrive. Nobody came to check on us or apologise for the delay. I had to grab a passing barman to ask for more drinks and after being there an hour and a quarter, chase up our mains. Such a shame because the food was very tasty but I wouldn’t eat there again "

Frequently asked questions

How much does a budget hotel in Baslow cost?
Budget hotel prices in Baslow vary, but you can find a great deal from £61 on Expedia. To find the cheapest budget hotels, be flexible with your dates—typically, off-peak and mid-week stays are cheaper. Stretch your budget further by looking for hotels with free breakfast, free parking or free airport shuttles. Sort your search results by "Price: low to high" to see our lowest rates.
Which area of Baslow is best to stay in for cheap hotels?
For budget-conscious solo travellers visiting Baslow, focusing on accommodations slightly outside the immediate village centre, such as those in nearby Bakewell or along the main roads leading into Baslow, often yields the most affordable hotel options. While Baslow itself is a charming, somewhat upscale village, direct hotel options within its core can be pricier due to its popularity as a gateway to the Peak District.

Bakewell, just a few miles from Baslow, offers a wider selection of budget-friendly guesthouses, B&Bs, and smaller hotels, especially for solo travellers looking for single rooms. It's a bustling market town with good public transport links to Baslow and other Peak District attractions, making it a practical base. You can easily catch a local bus to Baslow to explore Chatsworth House or enjoy the village's amenities.

Another strategy is to look for inns or pubs with rooms located on the outskirts of Baslow or in smaller hamlets like Bubnell. These often provide a more traditional, value-for-money stay, sometimes including breakfast in the room rate.
When is the most affordable time to visit Baslow?
The most affordable time to visit Baslow is typically during the shoulder seasons of spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October), or even in the quietest winter months (November-March), excluding the Christmas and New Year period. During these times, you'll generally find lower prices for accommodation and fewer crowds, making it easier to secure good deals on places to stay.

For solo travellers, visiting Baslow outside of peak summer offers a more tranquil experience. You can enjoy the stunning Peak District landscapes without the bustling crowds, often finding better rates on cosy B&Bs or guesthouses. The walking trails are still beautiful, and local pubs remain welcoming, but you'll benefit from the reduced demand.

Couples looking for a romantic and budget-friendly getaway might find the autumn months particularly appealing. The vibrant colours of the changing leaves add to the scenic beauty, and many attractions, such as Chatsworth Estate, offer reduced entry fees or special events during this period. Booking accommodation well in advance, even during the shoulder season, can help secure the best rates.

Winter, while colder, can also be very affordable, especially if you're prepared for the weather. Many local pubs offer warming meals at reasonable prices, and the crisp air makes for invigorating walks.
Is Baslow a budget-friendly destination?
While Baslow is generally considered a more upscale destination, travellers can absolutely experience its charm on a budget with some savvy planning.

For accommodation, consider charming guesthouses or self-catering cottages a little further out from the village centre, or look for deals during the off-peak seasons (late autumn to early spring, excluding school holidays). Solo travellers might also find good value in hostels located in nearby towns like Bakewell or Matlock, which are well-connected by local bus services.

Couples can enjoy many of Baslow's attractions for free or at a low cost. Exploring the beautiful Peak District National Park on foot is a prime example, with countless trails offering stunning views and invigorating walks. Popular spots like Chatsworth Park (the grounds, not the house itself) provide ample space for picnics bought from local shops in the village. Many of the picturesque villages surrounding Baslow, such as Edensor and Ashford in the Water, are lovely to wander through without spending a penny.
How can I save on a budget hotel in Baslow with Expedia?
There are plenty of ways to save on a budget hotel in Baslow. Join One Key™, our free travel rewards programme, to unlock Member Prices across a range of hotels. Typically, booking in advance will help you save on hotel bookings. If you're feeling spontaneous, be sure to check for last-minute deals.
What free activities should we do in Baslow?
Baslow offers several wonderful free activities, allowing you to immerse yourself in the natural beauty and charm of the Peak District without spending a penny.

For solo travellers and couples, exploring the stunning local landscape is paramount. You can embark on various walks right from the village. A favourite is the stroll along the River Derwent, offering tranquil views and a chance to spot local wildlife. Another excellent option is the Baslow Edge walk, which presents breathtaking panoramic vistas of the surrounding dales and moorland. It's a fantastic spot for photography and simply enjoying the fresh air.

The village itself is delightful to wander through. Admire the historic architecture, including the charming St. Anne's Church, and take a leisurely walk across Baslow Bridge, a picturesque ancient structure that spans the river. While Chatsworth House nearby has an entrance fee, you can still enjoy walking some of the public footpaths around its extensive grounds, offering glimpses of the grand estate and its deer park from a distance.
Is it cheaper to book flights and a hotel in Baslow as a package?
Booking a hotel and flight package on Expedia can be cheaper than booking flights and hotels separately. Bundling can lead to significant savings, especially for international travel or when booking well in advance. However, savings vary depending on factors like destination, travel dates, and availability, so it's wise to compare options. With access to over 300,000 hotels worldwide, Expedia makes it easy to build the perfect travel package.
Can I cancel my budget hotel reservation on Expedia?
Many Expedia hotel reservations are refundable, provided that you cancel before the hotel's cancellation deadline. This is often within 24-48 hours of your scheduled arrival. Be sure to check your booking confirmation for the exact cancellation policy. For maximum flexibility, use Expedia's "Fully refundable property" filter during your search to find the right budget hotel in Baslow for you.
