"A good location with good views over Barry.
The staff were welcoming and helpful.
The property was "tired" and with a good budget, has the potential to be a lovely venue.
A good value for money, basic accommodation, if your expectations are not too high."

Lovely period hotel. Bar serving lots of craft ales and offer delicious fresh meals, our evening meal and breakfast were amazing! Friendly staff that couldn’t do enough for us, we felt very welcome. Room was spotless and bed was so comfortable we will definitely be returning.
Visited the Saturday market just at the end of the street & cathedral opposite the hotel, perfect spot to explore.
My only criticism was hotel has no parking, but we managed to park next to cathedral on Cathedral Green,...

Arrived early as we were going to a matinee show in the Millennium centre. Although our room wasn't ready there was a place to store our belongings safely. Staff were very helpful and the breakfast is amazing.

One of the best showers my dad has ever had during my his night stay to watch football. Very comfortable bed. Would’ve liked to have had a bottle of water in the room but otherwise it was everything he wanted for a night’s stay.

You felt welcomed as soon as you walked through the doors, staff were really friendly and helpful when we needed to drop our bags off as we got to the hotel too early.

The lady at reception was very kind and complimentary. Made us feel welcome. The room had all the amenities youd night while away from home. The rooms are a little outdated and personal preference the bed was too firm for me. All round a good hotel; affordable pricing and 24hr staff. Would return.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which area of Axbridge is best to stay in for cheap hotels?
For budget-conscious solo travellers seeking cheap hotels in Axbridge, focusing on the town centre or just outside its immediate perimeter offers the best value. Axbridge is a small, historic town, so the concept of distinct "areas" for accommodation is less pronounced than in larger cities.
The most affordable options are typically found within walking distance of the medieval Square, where you'll find a few independent guesthouses and B&Bs that often provide better rates than chain hotels. These establishments frequently include breakfast, adding to the overall value. Solo travellers will appreciate the easy access to local pubs and eateries, many of which offer reasonably priced meals. The town's compact nature means free attractions like King John's Hunting Lodge and the local church are just a short stroll away.
Alternatively, consider accommodations slightly outside the very heart of Axbridge, perhaps on the roads leading towards Cheddar or Winscombe. These might be small, family-run B&Bs or even farm stays, which can offer a tranquil setting and good value, especially if you have your own transport or don't mind a short walk into town.
How much does a budget hotel in Axbridge cost?
Budget hotel prices in Axbridge vary, but you can find a great deal from £35 on Expedia. To find the cheapest budget hotels, be flexible with your dates. Typically, off-peak and mid-week stays are cheaper. Stretch your budget further by looking for hotels with free breakfast, free parking or free airport shuttles. Sort your search results by "Price: low to high" to see our lowest rates.
When is the most affordable time to visit Axbridge?
The most affordable time to visit Axbridge is generally during the shoulder seasons—late autumn (October-November) and early spring (March-April)—or in the quieter winter months (January-February). During these periods, you'll often find lower prices for accommodation and potentially better deals on travel, as the peak summer crowds have dispersed, and the Christmas rush is over.
For solo travellers, visiting during these off-peak times means a more relaxed experience when exploring the historic market town and its surrounding Mendip Hills. You might find more availability for charming guesthouses and B&Bs at reduced rates. Many local pubs and cafes remain open, providing a cosy atmosphere away from the bustling summer season.
While some attractions might have slightly reduced opening hours in winter, the natural beauty of the area, including walks around Cheddar Gorge or along the Strawberry Line cycle path, remains freely accessible.
Is Axbridge a budget-friendly destination?
Yes, Axbridge is a budget-friendly destination, particularly for those looking to explore the charming English countryside without breaking the bank. Its compact size and wealth of free natural attractions make it an ideal choice for economical travel.
Couples and solo travellers will find that many of Axbridge's delights are free or very low cost. The town itself is great for leisurely strolls, admiring the medieval architecture and the historic market square. For outdoor enthusiasts, the Mendip Hills, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, are right on the doorstep, offering numerous walking and cycling trails at no charge. Cheddar Gorge, with its stunning cliffs and caves, is also very close by; while the cave tours have an entry fee, admiring the gorge from its walking paths is completely free.
Accommodation options, particularly guesthouses and B&Bs, tend to be more affordable than in larger urban centres. Dining can also be budget-friendly, with local pubs offering hearty meals at reasonable prices. Picnics with provisions from local shops or the weekly market are another excellent way to save money while enjoying the picturesque surroundings.
What free activities should we do in Axbridge?
Axbridge offers several delightful free activities for budget-conscious travellers, allowing you to immerse yourself in its historical charm without spending a penny.
For couples and solo travellers, a stroll through the historic town centre is a must. You can admire the well-preserved medieval buildings, including the 13th-century King John's Hunting Lodge, which now houses a museum (though entry to the museum itself might incur a small fee, viewing the exterior is free). The winding streets and market square offer a picturesque backdrop for unhurried exploration.
Nature lovers can enjoy exploring the surrounding countryside. The Strawberry Line, a disused railway path, is great for a leisurely walk or cycle, offering scenic views of the Mendip Hills and surrounding fields. While the path itself is free, you might consider packing a picnic to enjoy along the way for an even more economical outing.
