Lancashire has a great industrial heritage, deriving from its genesis during the 18th Century Industrial Revolution and lasting well into modern times. The great Victorian entrepreneurs and captains of industry erected memorials to themselves as well as civic buildings for the good of the community, and in this way much of their vast fortunes did indeed trickle down the generations and to some extent benefit all members of society. Follies were popular during this and earlier periods, vanity projects for those with a lot of cash and time on their hands, and one of the most lavish of these is the Ashton Memorial in Lancaster. It cost a small fortune to build, and is certainly worth visiting from your Lancashire hotel or guesthouse if you're in the area.
You can find the Ashton Memorial in Williamson Park, in the county town of Lancaster. It dominates this pleasant green space, and although officially a folly it does succeed in blending in with its surroundings in a pleasing manner. Built by the industrialist Lord Ashton between 1907 and 1909, the memorial can be seen as a monument to human vanity or as a touching tribute to Ashton's second wife, depending on your point of view. It cost £80,000 at the time, and is undoubtedly a focal point for the park. The great and the good have often gone in for such projects, and there's no doubting that they do frequently enhance the surroundings, as this one does. Enjoy the Ashton Memorial from your Lancashire hotel or B&B for the small slice of colourful local history that it is.
Nowadays, the Ashton memorial is the setting for concerts, exhibitions, private functions and weddings throughout the year. The interior was recently restored to its former glory, whilst on the exterior the monument sports a magnificent copper dome that can be seen for miles around. Enjoy a day out here from your hotel in Lancashire if you're nearby or passing through, as it's a very imposing building and has a unique ambience.
