Pocket Guide: Antigua and Barbuda

Once you have returned from your hotel in Antigua & Barbuda you will be able to confirm that life truly can be a beach. There is, perhaps, nowhere in the Caribbean that conforms so well to our ideal of a tropical paradise: calm waters lapping against white-sand beaches that are fringed by the palm trees offering a welcome spot of shade. Delicious foods, impeccable service, luxury spas, fantastic snorkelling, exciting watersports and laid-back boat cruises are the only things that will drag you from those beaches. And that, of course, is fine by you!

Areas & Neighbourhoods: Where to Stay in Antigua & Barbuda

St. John’s (Antigua) – A stay in the capital of Antigua makes a refreshing break from all that chilling out with a cocktail. Here you can find some delightful cafes, a great choice of restaurants, interesting shops and an even more intriguing market.

English Harbour (Antigua) – A little south of the capital are the historic sights of English Harbour. Here you can find tales of historic pirates, Nelson’s dockyards and some incredibly swanky modern yachts. Wash down your jealousy with a drink or two: everyone can afford to enjoy the sunset with a hotel here!

The West Coast (Antigua) – If it is that deserted beach vibe you are after, then head for the west coast. The best beaches on the island can be found here, but many never leave their hotel resort to discover them. Pick a spot between Jolly Harbour and Old Road Town and find a beach you can call your own!

Barbuda – Beautiful Barbuda is also all perfect beach and no people. The colony of frigates outnumbers locals by far, but it would be a shame to let the birds be the only ones to enjoy the views. Take a boat out to the island and marvel at the sheer perfection of Barbuda.

Things to See with a Hotel in Antigua & Barbuda

Deserted beaches, colonies of frigate birds, local cricket matches and sailing regattas: there is always plenty to see in Antigua & Barbuda. If you dip your head under those crystal-clear waters there is plenty more to feast your eyes on: colourful tropical fish are in abundant supply here. You can take in the maritime heritage of the islands at English Harbour, where the historic brilliance of Nelson and the contemporary glitz of millionaire yacht owners can be enjoyed.

Things to Do in Antigua & Barbuda

What better than a spa treatment after all that hard work tanning on the beach? Or, perhaps, it’s a spot of fishing you need to relax yourself after all those exertions sampling the fine barbecued food? For those that want something a little more active there is fantastic scuba diving and snorkelling to be had, boat trips round neighbouring islands to enjoy, kitesurfing to be mastered, sailing to be sampled and many other watersports to dive into. Antiguans love cricket, so the brave, or the foolhardy, can challenge the locals at what they consider their own game. The food on the island is exquisite and culinary tours will ensure you can bring a little of that Caribbean spice home with you.
