As [Lake Maggiore](https://www.expedia.co.uk/Lake-Maggiore-Hotels.d6046854.Travel-Guide-Hotels) stretches for 40 miles, it’s not surprising that there’s a large range of three-star hotels found in the region. There is plenty of variety among the three-star lakeside resorts – everything from small family-run hotels to grander establishments with outdoor pools. You’ll also find several three-star lakeside hotels at Maggiore’s neighbour, Lake Orta.

### 3 Star Hotels for Active Holidays

If you enjoy a round of golf, tee off against a gorgeous backdrop of Lake Mergozzo at Golf Verbania, which is near the Fonde Toce nature reserve. Hire a bike and head off on an easy ride on the lakeside paths or tackle the more strenuous paths in the foothills of Mount Mottarone. The same trails are good for hikers, too, so you can choose anything from tough mountain treks to gentler rambles along the waterfront promenades.

If you’re into kayaking, stay in three-star accommodation by the rivers that empty into the lake, like the San Bernardino, the Cannobino and the Toce. Try Maggadino for some great diving, including submerged wrecks and an artificial reef.

### Explore Lake Maggiore’s Food from Your Two-Star Hotel

On most days of the week, you’ll find an open-air food market in the resorts along Lake Maggiore. Head for [Stresa](https://www.expedia.co.uk/Stresa-Hotels.d4874.Travel-Guide-Hotels)’s Friday market to pick up some of the region’s most succulent produce including rich local cheeses and honey.

### Explore Lake Maggiore’s History

Take a boat from Stresa to Isola Madre, home to the elaborate Palazzo Madre, which dates from the 16th to the 18th centuries. Among the palace’s ornate furnishings, china and paintings is the doll collection that belonged to the Countess Borromeo. There’s also an exquisite marionette theatre and another puppet theatre with a decidedly macabre cast of characters.

Only two miles from the Swiss border is the pleasant Medieval town of Cannobio, which has an 11th-century church. There’s also a painting of the Virgin Mary which has been attracting pilgrims since 1522 when the painting reportedly bled from its canvas.

At the southern end of Lake Maggiore, you can find three-star accommodation in the ancient town of Sesto Calende, which has Romanesque ruins as well as a museum showing the history of a local Iron Age and Bronze Age culture known as Golasecca.
