The same trails are good for hikers, too, so you can choose anything from tough mountain treks to gentler rambles along the waterfront promenades.

Take a boat from Stresa to Isola Madre, home to the elaborate Palazzo Madre, which dates from the 16th to the 18th centuries. Among the palace’s ornate furnishings, china and paintings is the doll collection that belonged to the Countess Borromeo. There’s also an exquisite marionette theatre and another puppet theatre with a decidedly macabre cast of characters.

Only two miles from the Swiss border is the pleasant Medieval town of Cannobio, which has an 11th-century church. There’s also a painting of the Virgin Mary which has been attracting pilgrims since 1522 when the painting reportedly bled from its canvas.

At the southern end of Lake Maggiore, you can find three-star accommodation in the ancient town of Sesto Calende, which has Romanesque ruins as well as a museum showing the history of a local Iron Age and Bronze Age culture known as Golasecca.
