Without the glories of the stunning Angkor Wat complex nearby it is true that Siem Reap would not exist. However, there is more to this likeable town than just a place to bed down after a full day’s sightseeing at Angkor. For a start there is the wonderful collection of restaurants to enjoy. Secondly, there are those wonderful spas and trendy bars. Finally, just outside town, there are floating villages, bird sanctuaries and miles of evocative paddy fields that offer that most elusive of qualities in Cambodia: tranquility.
Areas & Neighborhoods Around Siem Reap
There are more than one hundred monuments spread over a thousand square miles to explore as part of the Angkor Wat archaeological site, so book yourself a guide and leave plenty of time. You won’t regret it.
Siem Reap - Not the most ‘authentic’ of Cambodian experiences, but a very enjoyable one nonetheless. Excellent restaurants, cool cafes, trendy bars and all the luxury you could ever want.
Angkor Wat - This 12th century mausoleum represents the peak of perfection in Khmer art. From a distance reflected in the waters it is pure harmony, or up close, with its exuberant bas reliefs, it is just as beautiful.
Angkor Thom - Close to Angkor Wat is the last - and the greatest - capital of the Angkor era. Some of the city lies in romantic ruins but much allows you to imagine life in the ceremonial centre of the empire.
Preah Khan and Ta Prohm - In many ways the appeal of Angkor is seeing the trees and surrounding jungle reclaim their space as they claw at the stone monuments built here. Nowhere is this more so that at these two sites where trunks have intertwined themselves amongst the masonry in a battle that has lasted centuries.
Banteay Srei - This outlying temple is about 20 miles from the main complex but it is worth the trip out here. It is unique for its miniature size and pink hues.
