This hotel is in Elterwater which is a nice village but nothing like Ambleside. Do not expect to be able to walk to Ambleside!
Still, nice hotel (on a time - share complex) with great facilities. Two good pubs within walking distance and some great scenery / nice walks. All in all, not what we expected but would definitely go back.

Just had three wonderful days in the Lakes, staying at the Dale Lodge Hotel again. Fabulous hotel, wonderful food, excellent facilities and lovely comfy room with tea-making equipment (and a teapot), biscuits and mints. En-suite facilities lovely with Molton and Brown complementary toiletries. Staff helpful and welcoming. Ideal location for exploring Grasmere, Ambleside etc. Had a lovely meal in Tweedies bar as well (their bar/restaurant). Wouldn't hesitate to recommend.

Enjoyed our stay at Macdonalds Swan Hotel. We were in room 33 and the view was lovely. The room was very comfortable, clean and catering for your every need. It's our second stay at this hotel and couldn't fault it, but would like to have seen a smile or made to feel more comfortable by one of the waiters.he acted very professional but could have been a little more welcoming.
The hotel has lovely views of the lake. The facilities are up-to-date. It is well situated in the Lakes District relative to various places to visit and ease of travel to other ares of the Lakes (e.g., good bus service).
We first stayed here in 1989 and stayed numerous times in the 1990's, in 2001, 2002 and the last time in 2004. It had lost it's edge a little for us in the transition from a privately run and owned hotel to part of a chain (Von Essen). Recent developments, a new owner, and good reviews tempted us back and we were not disappointed! It isn't the same as in the days of Francis and Brian - it never could be - but it is still a unique experience. The position on Ullswater couldn't be better (I'd go for the views alone!), the staff were helpful and friendly, the food was exceptional without following fashion. Sharrow Bay always did things it's own way and that was what made it special. The décor and furnishings suit the house and location superbly and I'm pleased to see the Hotel still dares to be different in that respect. We won't leave it as long before our next visit. It is still Simply the Best!

Very good family room. Plenty of tea and coffee, good beds and a very decent bathroom. Exceptionally good breakfast - both in terms of choice and quality (can't comment on evening meal as we were elsewhere for that). Good location and nice staff too.

The immediate friendliness and professionalism of the hotel's owners was apparent the moment I arrived with my needs and requirments dealt with, within minutes. I was settled in and comfortable before I knew it.
Much appreciated, especially the generously delivered local knowledge about the town of Ambleside itself.
