The Sofitel is unadecuately located east of the city and far from the rest of horde of hotels in Chongqing, a city with traffic as heavy as your worst spring vacation in Beijing. Having said that, it is quite an impressive locale in the middle of... well, not much. Beautiful hotel; decoration in truly unique (I ended up taking pictures of some parts of the lobby just for keeps) and the room was nicely appointed with a beautiful room overlooking... another office building next to the hotel. :(. Don't expect much from the staff as far as English goes; even in one of the lounges the staff had a really hard time understanding complex native English words such as .... Cappuccino. It's a China thing I guess.
We really had a hard time with Chinese manners (people jumping in front of lines or sitting in your table for not wanting to walk farther etc) but other than that loved my experience at the Sofitel. The Expedia rating was right on spot.

We were not quite sure about the hotel location which seemed far from the train station, but it is worth travelling the 15km from the train station. We spent the day at the Hot Springs next door, which was totally unplanned. They are the best hot springs I have ever been to, loads of different springs for different ailments and fish pedicure spring, and waterfall pools.
Our hotel room had a nice view overlooking the gardens and mountain. The room had electric curtains which I had never experienced before. The breakfast was great, and the croissants of high quality.
There are also a couple of restaurants near the hotel, so you do not have to eat in the hotel.
The hotel was booked because it was close to a business appointment. The reception area is very impressive, door staff very helpful, check-in was seamless and the room for the one night I stayed there was spacious and well-appointed.
We arrived late at night after a delayed flight and were met with an offer of a delayed checkout before our similarly-delayed cruise the following day.
4pm for no extra! How good is that?
Right next door is a shopping district covering the highs and lows, everything that a traveller might want to buy was there. Especially, there are restaurants ranging from street vendors to top line - dozens of them. Of course, we only sampled two, but the competition keeps them up to the mark.
My wife and I cannot fault this establishment.
In closing, their rates were far below some of their competitors in the 4.5 to 5 star range.

The hotel is excellent. Design is good. Staff are very nice. Far better than any Hyatt Regency in the US. The only problem is the bar, which has no one in it...EVER. The televisions are ugly and weren't there last time I was at the hotel. The Chinese restaurant interior design is REALLY bad. Hyatt should change this immediately. I eat in the other restaurant and order off the Chinese restaurant menu.
