Winter Sports in the Bernese Alps

From November to April, the Bernese Alps is a magnet for skiers and snowboarders. There are good three-star hotels in Bernese Alps ski resorts such as Grindelwald and Wengen, but you can sometimes save money by choosing accommodation in lower-lying locations such as Interlaken. From there you can make day trips to into the mountains by car or on the Bernese Alps’ excellent public transport network.

Affordable Accommodation in Chic Gstaad

Gstaad is the most exclusive resort in the Bernese Alps. It is renowned for its independent boutiques, fine-dining restaurants and chic cafes and bars. Although many properties here are in the luxury range, you can find several affordable three-star hotels, so you can enjoy a taste of the high life without breaking the bank.

Lake Thun and Lake Brienz

Overlooked by picturesque medieval towns like Thun, Spiez and Iseltwald, the Bernese Alps region’s main lakes are great for boating excursions and summer swimming. Cycle next to the shores, visit the woodcarving village of Brienz, or try some kayaking or rowing.

Transport in the Bernese Alps

Whichever resort you choose for your three-star Bernese Alps hotel, an extensive rail, bus and cable car network will help you explore the rest of the region. With a Regional Pass, you can enjoy unlimited travel throughout the Bernese Alps outside of the winter sports season, including boat journeys and cable cars. The pass also provides discounts on the Schilthorn and Jungfrau mountain railways.

Hiking in the Jungfrau Region

The Jungfrau region is one of Europe's great open spaces. Popular short hikes include the route from Lauterbrunnen to Stechelberg, passing the magnificent Staubbach Falls waterfall.
