  • Florida Luxury holidays

Florida forms the distinctive peninsula shape on the south-eastern corner of the roughly rectangular United States of America. It ranks third among the US states in terms of population, and top among the mainland states for length of coastline - which perhaps helps to explain why it is so popular among holidaymakers. Add a favourable climate (with the occasional thunderstorm) and you have a great destination for a luxury break in this part of the United States.

A luxury break in the Florida sunshine

A favourable climate is always a good reason to book a luxury break anywhere, but Florida's is more compelling than most, and it's no surprise that it is named the Sunshine State. Temperatures regularly exceed 30°C in the summer months, starting in May and lasting right through until September. The autumn of October and November sees temperatures in the 20s, as does the springtime from February to April, but pack waterproofs or be prepared to take cover during the afternoons, as thunderstorms are common on a daily basis, bringing heavy rain with them too - and this proves to be a further attraction for many storm enthusiasts.

    The real orange county

Florida is famed for its citrus fruits, and rightly so - two thirds of the entire citrus crop of the United States is grown in Florida. This includes nearly three in four oranges, three in five tangerines, and more than half of the US grapefruit output too. Enjoy a cool, refreshing glass of freshly squeezed orange juice during your stay, as this is the official state beverage.

    When should I visit Florida?

Historians might like to book their break in Florida for the Easter weekend - and in fact it is widely believed that Easter gave the state its name. In Spain, the religious festival is also known as Pascua Florida, meaning 'Flowery Easter', and this is specifically linked with the date of April 2nd, regardless of when Easter falls. Puerto Rico governor Juan Ponce de Leon found Florida during an exploratory voyage of 1512-13, and gave it the name partly because of the time of year, and perhaps also because the foliage of the area's plant life was in full bloom. An Easter break is an ideal opportunity to honour this history, as well as avoiding some of the crowds and the hottest temperatures of the main summer season.
