Step Back In Time at Some of Devon’s Castles and Ancient Sites
————————————————————–

Devon has no fewer than eight castles, so no matter where you’re staying, there will be a nearby fortress to explore. We recommend Berry Pomeroy Castle for ghost stories, Dartmouth Castle for beautiful clifftop scenery, and Compton Castle for drama.

The county is also crammed with ancient sites, including Bronze Age burial mounds and natural wonders. Visit Lydford Gorge to see the White Lady waterfall and see where the “Robin Hood of the West” used to hide from the law.

Browse Beautiful Produce at a Local Market
————————————————-

Devon is home to some of England’s most beautiful rolling countryside – and that means it’s also full to the brim with fresh local produce. From local cheeses to locally-foraged herbs and fruit, rare breed meats and freshly-baked pies, whatever you love to eat, there will be something delicious for you to try.

Head to Exeter Farmers’ Market, Topsham Community Market and Kingsbridge Farmers’ Markets for some of the best selections.

Blow the Cobwebs Away on Dartmoor
—————————————-

Dartmoor has inspired authors, painters and poets for centuries thanks to its rugged landscapes and wild, blustery moorland. Lace up your walking boots, grab your map and compass and head out into untouched heaths and moors.

Here you’ll find wild Dartmoor ponies, as well as many rare species of flowers and animals, including birds of prey and even lizards and snakes as the weather warms up.

Try Crabbing at Low Tide
——————————-

In Exeter and the coastal areas of Devon, enjoy the sea air and sunny weather by fishing for crabs. We don’t advise keeping them for your supper, as there are plenty of local seafood restaurants serving fine local crabs to enjoy instead.

This classic seaside activity is best enjoyed at Back Beach in Teignmouth, The Embankment at Kingsbridge, and in the rock pools at Dittisham. Don’t forget your bucket!

Treat Yourself to a Gin Tasting Tour
——————————————-

Plymouth Gin is one of the most famous gins in the world, and at its distillery in The Barbican, Plymouth, you can learn about and taste its historic gins. In the bars around Devon, look out for Dartmoor Gin and Papillon Gin, too, which are both distilled in the local area.

Alternatively you can learn all about the blending and flavours of gin and become a master gin maker at the Devon Gin School. Blend your own aromatics and take a bottle of your very own gin home with you.

Dine in Style at a Restaurant with a View
————————————————

If you’re a foodie, Devon is a perfect minibreak destination for you. As well as world-class dining, you’ll find restaurants with amazing views to enjoy as you tuck in. Here are some of our top picks …

### The Breakwater Café, Brixham

This eatery near Berry Head overlooks the breakwater and over towards Paignton and Torquay. During the day expect a café vibe. In the evening it becomes something of a romantic bistro with seafood specials.

### The Grand Hotel, Torquay

For a touch of luxury – perhaps for an anniversary dinner or a birthday treat – The Grand Hotel can’t be beaten. Dine on award-winning food as you gaze out over the sea at sunset.

### Cafe-ODE, Teignmouth

A restaurant with a strong focus on sustainable and organic food, Cafe-ODE is set in former stables in the countryside and looks down the Ness coastline. It’s especially lovely to watch the weather roll in while you enjoy the cosy surroundings.

### Islington Hotel, Newton Abbot

Gorgeous rolling hills can be seen from the Islington Hotel, and on a sunny day, it’s a view that can’t be beaten. Here the food is prepared with local produce, and it even creates its own smoked hams and kippers.
