World Events: Hotels for… Oktoberfest
“Visitors to Oktoberfest are frequently surprised to learn it’s not all about beer. Ok, for most visitors it’s mostly about beer, but it’s also the world’s biggest folk festival with funfair rides, live music and celebrations of all things Bavarian. The action happens in Theresienwiese, a huge fairground southwest of Munich city centre. There are more than a dozen tents and the festival is much more manageable during the week when the weekend crowds have dissipated, so it’s worth staying a few days. Here are six handily-placed hotels for Oktoberfest – all are lederhosen optional.

TRYP München City Center Hotel
———————————-
Just a five-minute walk from the main entrance to the Theresienwiese festival ground on the northern end of the Bavariaring road, you can’t get much closer to the beer-drinking, thigh-slapping action. TRYP München City Center has modern, comfortable rooms, many with bonus views of Munich’s Old Town.

arthotel munich
—————
arthotel munich feels cool and young without trying too hard. It’s right next to Munich Hauptbahnhof (the main train station) and less than 10 minutes’ walk from the festival, making it an ideal hotel for Oktoberfest. The vibe in the highly stylised common areas, with their sculptures and arty furniture, is toned down in rooms, which are well set-up for Oktoberfest travellers – there are quad rooms available, so it’s a good choice for groups of friends.

relexa hotel
————
A few doors down is another Munich establishment with a distaste for capital letters; relexa is even closer to the fairground, dominating the corner of Schwanthalerstrasse and Paul-Heyse-Strasse. Another stylish, modern property, like most hotels for Oktoberfest, relexa has a 24-hour front desk, so you can squeeze every last drop out of the festival without fear of being locked out.

Boutique Hotel Falkenturm
————————-
If you’re planning on sightseeing in Munich beyond Oktoberfest then consider the Old Town area. This is the centre of Munich where many of the city’s sights are concentrated, including Marienplatz and St Peter’s Church. In the heart of the Aldstadt area near all the sights is Boutique Hotel Falkenturm. Don’t worry; if you get lager withdrawal, the hotel is moments from the city’s legendary Hofbrauhaus beer hall. And it’s a short walk from the Odeonsplatz U-Bahn station, where you can take the U4 or U5 lines straight to Theresienwiese.

Hotel Demas City
—————-
Clean, comfortable and modern are the order of the day at Hotel Demas City, almost a dead straight line along Landwehrstrasse from the festival fun. From the outside it feels very much that you’re in the main station district, but it’s bright and friendly inside and the location is hard to beat for getting stuck into Oktoberfest.

Hotel Metropol
————–
The Hotel Metropol’s dark wood-panelled lobby provides just the calming influence you need after a hectic day of Oktoberfest revelry. It’s 10-minutes’ staggering distance from the festival ground and the Old Town is walkable in the other direction. The Hotel Metropol is also conveniently close to the Hauptbahnhof, where you can pick up the U-Bahn to explore the rest of Munich’s sights, such as the English Garden.”
