It is very close to point lobos, downtown Carmel, and 17 mile drive. The views were really spectacular. We wanted a pool--so staying in a cute little inn in downtown Carmel or something wasn't really for us. So this hotel checked those boxes. I typically really love Hyatts as well, but this one probably has seen better days. Few things to note: -Staff was super kind and friendly. Very willing to help. -We stayed in an ocean view room and had free parking. The free part was amazing--we actually couldn't believe it. The parking lot, however, was really stressful. About 5 spots and VERY tight. It was always a challenge getting in and out. -Pool was nice--but pretty small (and deep!). I think there were only like 8 chairs or something and that made it kind of stressful/awkward when people were hovering or clearly didn't have a place to sit. -Towels were out frequently and they were pretty worn towels to begin with. -Our room was pretty small--bathroom was pretty small. Balcony was cool, but pretty small with pretty hard furniture. Not the most comfortable. -In general...relatively loud. We heard our neighbors a lot. We had to be those people one time and call the desk to report some dance party or something that was happening upstairs. Our walls were literally shaking with the bass. It was crazy. It is a big, kind of sprawling "resort" so it is a little tricky knowing how to navigate everything. The cinnamon toast at Jack’s Monterey was delish. There’s also a Carmel bakery downstairs, which was a convenient treat to have just steps away. The hotel lobby itself set the tone right away. It felt laid-back yet inviting, exactly the kind of atmosphere we look for when we’re on vacation. We were also able to check in early, which made our arrival smooth. Such a great bonus! They even provided scavenger hunt activities for our kids, which was such a thoughtful touch. This is truly a family-friendly hotel that makes traveling with kids feel easy & enjoyable. I’m very particular about bathrooms, beds, & overall cleanliness, especially since I have an immunocompromised child, so this is something I don’t take lightly. Portola did not disappoint. Both the bathroom & bedroom were spotless & even better than expected in person. The bed & pillows were incredibly comfortable. The A/C worked great, & having a ceiling fan was a nice bonus touch. The photos online truly don’t do this place justice. It’s even more beautiful in person. The heated pool was a hit, & the towels felt clean and luxurious. The staff were nice! There was a tiny red spider spotted on my child’s bed, but thankfully my eldest caught it right away. Aside from that small moment, everything about our stay was superb and exceeded our expectations. Highly recommended!"
