The area to the west of the Old City began to grow in the 19th Century and accelerated following Israel’s independence in 1948. Six million Jews were murdered by the Nazis during the Holocaust in Europe, and Yad Vashem is Israel's memorial and museum dedicated to their memory. The Holocaust Museum tells the story, and the memorial site includes gardens, walks, exhibitions and other installations that make for a sombre yet essential visit for anyone coming to Jerusalem. Admission to Yad Vashem is free.
