Pocket Guide: Jerusalem Old City Hotels

Find Hotels in Jerusalem’s Old City

There is a mix of hotels within Jerusalem’s Old City, from budget hostels to four-star hotels and family-friendly establishments, so you are sure to find something that suits your tastes and budget. Stay in the Old City and you will be surrounded by some of the most famous historical and religious sites anywhere in the world, a place where just wandering the streets is guaranteed to be an experience.

Behind the Gates and the Walls

The Old City of Jerusalem is surrounded by the 16th-century Ottoman walls, and a good way to get a sense of the neighbourhood is to climb the walls and follow the Ramparts Walk, which will give you a great perspective on the Old City. Another popular walk in the district is the Via Dolorosa – the Way of Sorrows – which follows the route Christ took past the 14 Stations of the Cross.

There are eight gates in the walls still in use that allow you to access the Old City. The busiest is the Jaffa Gate – where you will also find the starting point of the Ramparts Walk – while the Damascus Gate to the north will bring you into the Muslim Quarter and the hustle and bustle of the Arab bazaar. The other quarters of the Old City are the Jewish Quarter, the Armenian Quarter and the Christian Quarter.

Thousands of Years of History

As a holy city for Muslims, Jews and Christians alike, it is unsurprising that the Old City of Jerusalem is packed with sites of historic and religious significance. The Temple Mount is home to the Dome of the Rock and the Al-Aqsa Mosque – the third holiest site in Islam – while the Western Wall is the holiest site Jews are permitted to pray. The Tower of David Museum of the History of Jerusalem, close to the Jaffa Gate, is an excellent place to get some understanding of the history contained within these city walls.

Book a hotel in the Old City of Jerusalem and the fascinating historic heart of this amazing place will be right on your doorstep.
