Pocket Guide: Wailea

Staying in Wailea on Maui Island

This corner of Maui Island was once covered completely in scrubland, but now this seaside resort resembles Beverly Hills. Wailea is a playground for well-heeled travellers filling their time lounging by the crystal-clear Pacific or teeing off at one of the three golf courses. You can also work up a sweat in the large tennis complex.

Wailea’s coastal trail has striking views of nearby islands and the sprawling gardens of the hotels. At the southern end of the trail, there’s an extensive garden filled with native plants as well as traditional lava-rock houses. Head northwards along the trail to get to Wailea’s five fantastic beaches.

Hotels in Wailea

Wailea’s hotels and resorts are mainly lavish five-star establishments, though there is also a handful of mid-range three- and four-star family-friendly resorts offering value for money. All hotels are just steps from Wailea’s many beaches and golf courses. You can enjoy plenty of deluxe facilities at the hotels, including outdoor pools, beachside restaurants and modern fitness centres.

Most hotel rooms come with garden or ocean views, so you can kick back on the furnished lanais. But you can keep up with your favourite shows instead, using the free WiFi or on the flat-screen TV.

Golf on Maui Island

A popular pastime of locals and tourists, golf is widely played across the island. Maui’s fourteen courses have each been carefully designed by specialist architects to make the most of the stunning landscape. Things start to heat up on the green during the annual PGA Tour’s Hyundai Tournament of Champions when many pro golfers flock to the island.

Exploring the Ahihi-Kinau Natural Area Reserve

Under a 20-minute drive south of Wailea, the Ahihi-Kinau Natural Area Reserve is one of the island’s best spots for snorkelling. The area is a no-fishing zone, so the waters have shoals of tropical fish and other native sea life. The water is calm and shallow, making it a perfect place for unexperienced snorkelers to have a go. On the drive back, stop off at the Ulupalakua Vineyard to sample some of Maui’s best wines.
