The Azores are a volcanic island group located way out in the Atlantic, around 1,000 miles from the edge of the Iberian Peninsula. An autonomous region of Portugal, the largest of the islands is Sao Miguel and its capital is Ponta Delgada. The ‘Green Island’ is full of lush vegetation, majestic scenery that includes volcanic lakes, large sandy bays and dramatic green hills. Ponta Delgada is a traditionally Portuguese city, with whitewashed stone houses and cobbled streets, where you’ll find traditional restaurants and cafes serving island specialities. With a warm and balmy climate, hot springs and lush vegetation all year round, Sao Miguel is a truly unique holiday destination.
Ponta Delgada - The island’s capital and main city is also its historic centre. The city’s attractions are mostly located along the Avenida Infante D. Henrique and include the City Gates and new Portas do Mar development.
Ribeira Grande - The island’s second city and gateway to the north is also home to a historic centre and boasts vast beaches, with perfect conditions for windsurfing.
Sete Cidades - Located to the west of the island, you’ll find the magnificent twin volcanic lakes here.
Caldeira Velha - A stunning National Park with rich vegetation and hot springs where you can take a dip. It’s also got great access to the Lagoa do Fogo.
Start your visit in the charming historic centre of Ponta Delgada, the island’s capital and main city. Treat yourself to some fresh seafood and other local dishes, with wine and cheese a speciality on the island. Visit the numerous calderas and hot springs around Sao Miguel, and take a relaxing dip. The Sete Cidades twin lakes, each a slightly different colour due to the mineral rich water, are a must see. Climb the steep mountain walls around the lakes before cooling off in the water. Discover more hot springs at Furnas, located on the eastern side of the island or head to the lush National Park at Caldeira Velha.
Visit the tea plantations at Porto Formoso and discover how tea has been produced here for generations. The island is also marked with miles of hiking trails, taking you up into the lush mountains and offering stunning views. There are some great tracks around the Sete Cidades area that are suitable for the whole family. Catch a boat out on the water on a whale or dolphin spotting trip or try your hand at sea kayaking, windsurfing or diving, all of which are very popular here. Visit more hot springs at Ponta da Ferraria, with volcanic water reaching temperatures of 62˚C.
