São Miguel Island Attractions

The Azores are a volcanic island group located way out in the Atlantic, around 1,000 miles from the edge of the Iberian Peninsula. An autonomous region of Portugal, the largest of the islands is Sao Miguel and its capital is Ponta Delgada. The ‘Green Island’ is full of lush vegetation, majestic scenery that includes volcanic lakes, large sandy bays and dramatic green hills. Ponta Delgada is a traditionally Portuguese city, with whitewashed stone houses and cobbled streets, where you’ll find traditional restaurants and cafes serving island specialities. With a warm and balmy climate, hot springs and lush vegetation all year round, Sao Miguel is a truly unique holiday destination.

Ribeira Grande - The island’s second city and gateway to the north is also home to a historic centre and boasts vast beaches, with perfect conditions for windsurfing.

Start your visit in the charming historic centre of Ponta Delgada, the island’s capital and main city. Treat yourself to some fresh seafood and other local dishes, with wine and cheese a speciality on the island. Visit the numerous calderas and hot springs around Sao Miguel, and take a relaxing dip. The Sete Cidades twin lakes, each a slightly different colour due to the mineral rich water, are a must see. Climb the steep mountain walls around the lakes before cooling off in the water.
